“Great location”
Reviewed April 23, 2014

I stayed in a 4-bed mixed dorm on the 4th floor. Beds were very comfortable with thick duvets, and I loved the tatami mats on the floor. The beds each had a private lamp and a personal locker just outside. As a mixed dorm, beds could have done with a curtain. Also the communal sinks were right outside our door, the toilets very close by :( Toilets weren't very private - if the light was on and the hall dark, it was easy for passers-by to see in! Shoers old fashioned but very clean, and nice to use. Hot water only starts at 8am, when the receptionist arrives - inconvenient if you're catching an early train.

Staff were lovely and very friendly, but could have been a bit more knowledgeable - they had no idea of the closed days of shops they recommended, and were only able to tell me of three vegetarian restaurants, two of which had shut down, the third was closed for annual leave!

Room Tip: No lift, so ask for a lower floor if you're not too fit.

Stayed in a private room with private toilet and bathroom (approx 1.5x2m). Uncomfortable mattress and place is pretty old. Towel for rent YEN100 and shower amenities can be bought at reception. Free wifi only in living room and free use of computers. Friendly staff but once checked out, you are not allowed to enter the building at all, not even when you still have friends staying at hostel. In regards to location, easy access by tram and all other sightseeing locations

My girlfriend & I really enjoyed our stay here. Upon arrival the owner of the hostel welcomed us, showed us all of the facilities, recommended where to go and how to get there, and gave us a discount card for the city's main attractions (50% off most of what the city has to offer for tourists).
The hostel itself is very clean. The common area is cozy and pleasant, and has a kitchen. Our private room with en suite toilet & shower had enough room and felt spacious (given this is a hostel, not a hotel). The only thing we did not like was the WiFi signal in our room which was terribly weak (However, this didn't really bother us and it works well in the common area).

The location is pretty good. You can walk to the hostel from Nagasaki Station in about 10 minutes (or take tram line #3 which stops very near by). In general, I'm not sure if there is a truly bad location for hotels and hostels in Nagasaki since it is a rather small city which is well connected by the tram lines.

The city itself is located in a beautiful area which should be appreciated from Suwa Shrine (a few minutes walk from the hostel, don't miss it), and from the top of Mount Inasa (which you can access using the cable car which is 50% off using the discount card which the hostel provides). I suggest taking the cable car during the late afternoon, while there is still daylight and watch the city lights slowly turning on. The sunset view is pretty awesome as well.

Another tip for the city - If you enjoy the onsen experience (hot springs), DO NOT miss the onsen facility that Yasuragi Iojima hotel offers. The hotel offers a free shuttle bus from and to Nagasaki (takes around 40 minutes) which you need to book in advance (the hostel can take care of that for you), or you could take a ferry to the island. The onsen facility is really good, and the outdoor bath overlooks the ocean and the mountains - Truly beautiful.

If I were ever to come back to Nagasaki, I would stay at this place again.

we stayed a couple of nights at Akari, the couple who own it are incredibly nice, and very helpful. The hostel is covered with information on things to do and they are very happy to help. The double room was huge for japanese standards and clean. It was a great place to stay.

Room: Mixed dormitory with a shared bathroom and shower.

I found the location to be very convenient. The main train station can also be reached in about 15 minutes on foot, and there is a tram stop very close by. I was staying at Akari during the Lantern Festival, and the festival events and attractions could be easily reached on foot.

I was rather fond of the common room, and the kitchen is really well-stocked. Since they have all the basics (pots, pans, salt, pepper, oil, soy sauce, etc.), it was really easy to prepare a meal. Convenience stores, as well as a small grocer are also nearby.

As many have said, the staff is incredibly friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Most of them had a good command of English, for those who speak little Japanese, and they were happy to give recommendations and directions.

Other things of note: They have a very strict no-guest policy, i.e. if you are not staying or working at the hostel, you are not allowed in the hostel. I am not sure if this is the standard at many hostels in Japan, but this was not something that was mentioned when we arrived at the hostel. I do not fault them for this policy, as it is conducive to the safety of those staying there; however, since it was not mentioned upon arrival and then I was given conflicting information (no guests past a certain hour vs. not at all), I was put in an awkward situation a couple of times, when friends were left waiting outside in the cold. So, hopefully, this note will prevent that from happening to some of their future guests.

There are certain times when hot water is available: 8:00-12:00 and 18:00-24:00, I believe. Just something to keep in mind if one either tends to get back late or head out early in the morning.

We stayed here for 5 nights towards the end of a four week trip to Japan, and I have to say it's quite possibly the friendliest experience I've had in a hostel anywhere in the world.

From the moment we checked in all of the staff were genuinely welcoming and hospitable, we soon found out it's a family run business and it definitely shows. We were shown to our room on the 2nd floor where we had an en-suite wetroom with bath and shower, a reasonably comfortable double bed and a functional air conditioning unit. The decor and facilities are not state of the art but they are very clean and well maintained. Decent free wi-fi was available throughout and free use of Apple computers.

Nagasaki is a wonderful city, and throughout the hostel there is an abundance of up to date information about things to do and see while you stay, they also have a fantastic selection of local goods for sale at reasonable prices, perfect souvenirs or gifts if that's your thing.

One night after bumping into the owner at the desk, I asked about local beaches that were worth exploring, the next day there was a note pushed under our door, with a google map showing the beach location and an unexpected and kind offer of taking us to this beach in his car the next day, it was one of the most exciting days we spent in Japan, certainly one I won't forget, and all thanks to the owner who wanted us to experience Nagasaki as he knew it, thanks Shingo!

During our 5 night stay we made full use of the great kitchen facilities, totally spotless and very well equipped, we visited lots of local food markets (within a few minutes of the hostel) and really felt like we were cooking at home! A welcome break from 3 weeks of restaurant eating.

The owner and his family also run a small Cafe close to Nagasaki JR station, definitely worth a visit if you're heading up to the Peace statue/Bomb museum. Same immense hospitality as the hostel and food to match, we were given a homemade apple crumble dish free of charge as we were staying in the hostel, we genuinely felt at home!

We loved our time in the city of Nagasaki, Shingo and his family made us feel like we were old friends, we'd always look forward to coming back to the hostel at the end of each day we spent there.

I'm probably forgetting many other outstanding examples of the service we received, but one that sticks with me was the owner taking us to Nagasaki JR station in his car when we checked out, we genuinely were sorry to say goodbye to him and Nagasaki, we will absolutely be back and will be staying again!

This hostel and it's staff are an absolute credit to Nagasaki.

Good place to spend a night. A bit far from the train station, but there's an easy access by tram.

Booked a single room, which turned out to be quite spacious with comfy bed and private bathroom. Basically, it's everything I was looking for in a budget hostel. Room itself was a bit worn out, but clean and tidy, so I was satisfied.

Friendly staff with good English is also a plus.
