Nagasaki Penguin Aquarium

We took the bus from Nagasaki station (the information desk next to the train portal will help you finding the right one) to the aquarium. The ride costs 410 yen one way and probably it would have been cheaper to get a day ticket. You pay in the bus with coins. The bus station for going back to Nagasaki is placed about 20 meters away from the arrival bus stop.
The aquarium is wonderfully placed at the seaside. Great view. We were during the week and so very few people were there. Unfortunately, the kayak thing is only open on weekend.
The aquarium is very interesting. Though not very large, you get to see a bunch of very exotic sea animals (even at the Vancouver aquarium I hadn't seen some of those). The penguins are amazing, the main (there are 3) of the penguin bassins is very deep and you can watch them swim around on two floors. Since we were there during the week we didn't get to see any extra shows like the 'touch a penguin' thing (not sure if the penguins weren't happy about that..) but still was a great experience.
Fun thing is the virtual theater where you can draw a fish which will then swim on the 3D Screen ;-)
There is a small cafe selling drinks, ice cream and soup and a 7eleven near the bus station.

A wonderful place for kids to observe penguins. You can see parade by King Penguins. Not so many people go there, so good for kids.

I took my three kids here, and they all seemed to enjoy it. They loved the "march of the penguins". I thought it was a bit small, and we had seen everything un under 90 mins.
The thing we enjoyed most was being able to touch the pengins. I am glad we went, but most likely won't go back.

positive: you can see the penguin closely and clearly!! I study a lot from this aquarium too. It's not too crowded like the aquarium in Osaka.

negative: too far! But the scenery to the aquarium is really worth it!

Tips: If you go here early, you can see the penguin show. I forget the time, but perhaps it's around noon. Btw, the bus fare from nagasaki eki is 420Yen, prepare coins because the bus don't accept others. You can change the coin inside of the bus, but do it long before you get off from the bus. Please count the coin again. I don't know why but when I changed the coin with the machine it short of 50yen and 20 yen.

I slightly made a mistake with my itinerary. If you're planning to go around Nagasaki after the aquarium, buy Nagasaki pass at Nagasaki Station for 500 Yen. After you finished with the aquarium, you can drop by at the first tram station you see. You can start your trip from Glover Garden! The bus fare is going to be cheaper too.

About the bus in Nagasaki, you will hop on from the middle door. then see your left or right, there will be a machine giving you a small piece of paper with a number. It shows you the number of the bus stop you depart. You can see how much money you have to pay for the bus fare by looking at the board above the driver which is going to change every station. Match it with the small paper in your hand.

Enjoy Nagasaki!!!

A fun aquarium that focuses much of its attention on the most adorably awesome animals ever - penguins.

It's not a large aquarium and doesn't take long to see everything, but the penguin exhibits are top notch. While the penguins are its focus, there are other excellent aquarium tanks - with things like reef fish, jellyfish, sharks, giant crabs, giant catfish, and a pool for kids to touch urchins and starfish.

While their website is only in Japanese, run it through Google translator and you can find out what time they have events such as penguin feedings, march of the penguins, and penguin petting.

Getting there is a little difficult - it's way outside the center of town and requires you to take a bus. The local tourist offices will give you bus directions, but it requires you to be able to read a little Japanese to know which bus to get on. In our case, we decided to take a taxi to and from. Just ask the driver to take you to "Pingin Suizokukan."

Once there, buy your tickets from the automated machines at the entrance, then grab an English language map/brochure on your way in. There's a small gift shop at the end and a cafe that serves drinks, ice cream, and noodle meals.

If you have kids in tow, the fun and charming penguins make a great counter-balance to the weightier more emotional sights of Nagasaki.
