On our first full day in Osaka in November, we decided to mainly stick with touristy spots. So after our visit to Osaka Castle, we headed to Tsutenkaku Tower and the surrounding Shinsekai district of Naniwa-ku. Shinsekai is known for their kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers of meat and veggies) so we figured Yokozuna Tsutenkaku Shop would be a good place to grab a light lunch.

It’s difficult to miss this restaurant with their bright lanterns and murals of sumo wrestlers on the exterior.

Most kushikatsu are between 100¥ to 200¥ and each table has a communal container for dipping sauce. Make sure you don’t double dip… instead, use the complimentary cabbage leaves like a spoon to scoop up more of the sauce.

We picked skewers of beef, chicken thigh, eggplant, prawn, scallop, and octopus to go along with our White Melon mocktail (350¥) – I’ve really missed the bright green melon drinks that we’ve had in Japan. The skewers themselves were quite good but I can definitely see how they can add up after a while.

On our last trip to Japan, we made the mistake of not trying the yakisoba so we were determined to get our yakisoba fix on this visit. The Yakisoba (500¥) here was pretty good. It wasn’t a large portion size but it’s priced more like an appy. Definitely comfort food and a nice change up from the deep-fried foods.

Last up for us was the order of Gyoza (550¥). We’re not sure why but it took a very long time for these gyoza to arrive at our table (we almost thought they forgot about our order). When it finally arrived, we were treated to a perfectly thin skin with a slight crispness to it.

Service was a bit hit-and-miss but I guess that’s to be expected in this kind of establishment. We weren’t sure how to get our bill but finally found out we just had to take our table number to the front desk where they tally up our meal. One of the good things about this restaurant is that it’s open 24 hours a day so you can grab your skewer fix anytime you want.

A fusion between authen local food with street food. Great ambience with hundreds of people around. Very busy. Had to wait for 20min to get a tablr but worth the wait. Not very comfortable but enjoyed a lot. Not expensive.
