“Closest you can get to the marine animals without getting into the water and being wet.”
Reviewed November 11, 2012

Amazing! That one word sums up my experience here. Touted as one of the largest if not THE largest aquarium in the world, the Kaiyukan really lives up to my expectation. The entrance fee is JPY2000 but you can get a JPY100 discount with the Kansai Pass.

The animals were well looked after, the tanks were huge and resembles each animals natural habitat. They were able to swim freely. The dolphins, sharks, stingrays, seals swam like lightning speed, chasing each other. The biggest attractions like what other reviewers mention is definitely the whale shark. I was lucky to see it during feeding time, the way it followed the caretaker was amazing. The crabs were cool too.. my first impression when I saw them were "TRANSFORMERS! DECEPTICONS"

I went during weekdays so it wasn't very crowded. Eventhough most of the guide only speaks Japanese, you can rent an audio guide in English/ Chinese or Korean to help you navigate the course.

Location wise, it's at the outskirt of Osaka. Approximately 30mins from Umeda Station to Osakako. (I took the Red Line and change to green line at Honmichi Station, you can also change at Namba). The moment you leave the subway station (Osakako), you'll notice the difference in tempo and amount of people. Osaka station were hectic, Osakako is more laidback.

From the exit, you have to walk for approx 5-10mins to get to the aquarium. It's right next to the Tempozan Ferris Wheel, so if you didn't see the aquarium signage, just follow the Ferris Wheel signs.

Caution: Wear a good walking shoes and bring some refreshments. The aquarium is huge and to enjoy it better you would need to take breaks. This is especially practical for kids and toddlers. They have stools where you can watch the marine lives just swimming and playing and it's quite therapeutics. You could lose sense of time in there. I spent approx 3 hours here.

“Surprising mid-size aquarium”
Reviewed November 11, 2012

The tanks in this aquarium offer fantastic views. They got cool sharks, some impressive deep ocean life and even a whale shark. Lovely plan for an afternoon. You can enjoy the sunset in the cafe and relax watching the bay.

“Best Aquarium”
Reviewed November 8, 2012

We found this aquarium very well layed out and full of many interesting exhibits. The whale shark was there during our visit and was definitely one of the highlights. This tank is so large with many viewing areas from top to bottom. It was very well worth the price of admission (around $25 CAD) and highly recommended for young and old.

“Osaka kaiyukan”
Reviewed November 8, 2012

Great experience! Worth the 2000y admission. Loved the varieties of marine life and the clever set out. You start from a rainforest setting with two playful river otters and gradually work your way down through the different seas. Highlights were the King penguins, California sea lions, seals, sea turtle, manta rays. Nearby tempozan has a mall filled with shops, food and entertainment. Osakako subway station is a short walk away from the aquarium.
