“Great hotel”
Reviewed September 20, 2012

The hotel is a great hotel, it is a really good standard with well maintained rooms. It is a short 5 minute walk from Nankai Namba station and so the subway is also close to you. The hotel is easy to walk past as it doesn't really stand out, this being because the hotel is in part of a covered shopping arcade but this is a good thing. The arcade is a bustling place and is great as there are lots of food outlets around. It really is a good hotel with everything you need close by.

We made a booking for 2 adults and 2 children (7,11) through hotels.com. When I received the confirmation it said adjoining rooms and 2 single beds. When we turned up at the hotel we got one room with two single beds. I tried to explain to the manager that I made a booking for a family and asked where the children should sleep. The manager said this was not the first time there had been problems with family-bookings and he said the hotels.coms website was at fault.

As the beds where to small we had to pay for an additional room. No fun when you are on a budget.

This is my 2nd time at this property; the last was in 2009. Nothing had really changed, The hotel is located in a shopping area and not really accessible by car or taxi. The nearest street is about where the exit from the underground Namba Walk comes up (hallway B, exit 21), by the Bic Camera store. From there, it is about a block's walk. Here's a link to the access map: http://www.nambaorientalhotel.co.jp/access/accessmap_en.pdf

Rooms are spacious, there's a refrigerator within. Free internet. No wifi. There are many small restaurants nearby, and a Lawson convenience store next door, and a kaiten sushi place on the other side of the door. Don't be put off by the main elevator from the entrance smelling like cigarettes, it does because it also serves the Pachinko place on the B1 floor. Staff does fine in English. Rooms are nicely air conditioned (needed in Osaka). Not the cheapest room in town, but for me, it's Old Reliable. $235/night, average across 8 days. Saturdays are more expensive.

Located in Sennichimae Market and easy to access from Nankai Namba Station. Dotonbori is about 5 minutes walk, and Shinsaibashi Market is about 10 minutes walk from the Hotel. Many nice restaurants around the hotel so you don't have to include breakfast when you make a reservation. There are lots of Pachinkos all around the hotel, but if you get in to the hotel, there are no more noises in a small lobby and a hotel room. A bed in the room was very comfortable. But you would better not expect nice view of the hotel room.
Bath tube was big enough. We could relax very comfortably when we came back to hotel.

On arrival into Osaka, we took a cab from the train station and the driver could not find the location of this hotel despite asking a policeman, shopkeeper and a passerby. Eventually he checked his GPS and managed to find it!

This hotel does not have a drive way to drop guests off and the nearest taxi stand is actually along the main road 3 minutes away!

Nevertheless, the lobby was pretty much cramped with people and very unassuming in terms of the deco.

Initially I was a bit worried on this hotel as I was not sure what sort of accommodation we will be given.

When we checked in and given the room keys to the room, the minute we stepped into the lift, lo and behold, there was a back courtyard! It was very beautiful with fountains, cherry blossoms and park benches! We were pleasantly surprised!

We were also surprised when we got into our room. It was spacious and very comfortable.
We will recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Osaka as it is actually in the middle of Dontonburi (BIG shopping area) and hop and skip to everywhere else via the subway, 5 minutes from the hotel and despite the busy location, it was surprising very quiet in the room.

There are also plenty of eateries about both western and Japanese foods so no starving here!

They also have coin laundry and dryer should you need some washing done but may have to do a few rounds if you have a heavy load as both machines are not really heavy industry types.

Lastly, breakfast was provided by the hotel but it is Japanese style with very little western providence.

We loved the location- right in the incredible arcade complexes of Minami. Some of the directions on Trip Advsor to the hotel are now out of date. Best suggestion if coming by train: stay in the underground Namba Walk. Take corridor B and find exit 21. Look on the roof for the exit numbers. Come out. Walk away from Sennichimae Dori for about 50 metres. The hotel entrance is beside a Lawson's and MacDonald's. You won't see it until you are outside as it is recessed. Reception is on the third floor of the building.
The convenience of the location more than makes up for the difficulty finding it.
The room was a little dated but fine- a very good size for a Japanese hotel and the special we got on Expedia made the price a bargain. Bathroom was great. The bath was amazingly deep. Bath salts etc. were provided.
The only problem - the pervasive smell of cigarettes even on the nonsmoking floors. Buy a can of room freshener.
Would definitely stay here again; especially on a 40% off special.
Check in and check out were a breeze.

The location of this hotel is quite nice as it is inside a covered canopy when you step outside of the hotel. There are lots of small food stall, eateries, convenient stores etc. Although the location is not the best as it is a bit of a walk towards the train station (but in Japan 5-10 mins of brisk walk is normal). I would probably prefer the swisshotel location but of course that hotel is more expensive and a better quality one. This is a 3 star hotel. Room is a bit small, we booked a superior twin room and was given a room on the 9th floor. It is ok but for a family of 2 adult with a kid it is a bit cramp. We don't know where to put our luggage. We did manage to fit everything for 11 nights though. The map of the hotel from its website is quite useful as we navigate the hotel from the train station upon arrival. Thanks also to lots of TA who gave valued instructions and pictures that helped us when we first arrived we did remember those picture and the search was less frustrating. It is relatively close to the Information Center on Namba on the Takashimaya building which is a great help as well. There is also a Travellex (money changer) near the Information Center so that is also a helpful place when we were running low on cash. We never really had lots of encounter with their hotel personnel just some simple request like additional blanket or how to close the window. But the staff are generally ok. They are not really that super nice as I have encountered in other hotels in Japan before (some staff from other hotels in Japan would bend backwards to help you like get as much info on train rides and even make reservations for you) but maybe its because this is just a 3 star hotel. A bit of a negative that we experienced with this hotel was that after a few days we felt that the room was a bit dusty and my wife and kid were having some morning allergies so we ask the hotel staff to maybe vacuum the room in more detail. The guy on the front desk just stare at me and said " Yes they do vacuum later" However, for the past week before we left the hotel we felt that our rooms were never really cleaned well. Most of the items were just left untouched. They just re-set the beddings, maybe vacuum only the exposed area, empty your trash, replace your cups, and maybe do some spot wiping only. The other thing that really is a bit of a negative with this hotel is that it sits on top of some pachincos so the elevator from the 1st floor to the lobby floor (3rd floor) smells a bit of smoke. The Lobby also does have that cigarette smoke. Also, having to use a card key to enter the elevator from the 3rd floor lobby to your floor room is a bit of a hassle especially when you have lots of stuff carrying on your hand.

They have complimentary 2 drinking water bottle everyday, 2 japanese green tea sachet but no free coffee. Coffee is Y200 per cup and you have to use a machine similar to nespresso type, but in fairness it is a good coffee.

They have in room mini ref with some drinks for a fee. TV reception is good quality but all in Japanese. They have a coin laundry on the 4th and 5th floor so that is also a good thing. Y200 per load/wash. Dryer is just above the washing machine and it is free.
