RIHGA Royal Hotel Osaka
Ranked #31 of 342 Hotels / Ryokan in Osaka
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 4, 2012

From structure of building to customer service and room comfortability is absolutely amazing. The underground station is connected to the hotel, hence it means if the weather is rainy, it does not affect reaching or going out from hotel.

The only down point is that is it not particularly near to hot spot for sightseeing. But given the same reason, we will find yourself in the opposite direction from being packed with crowd.

Despite speaking English in Japan is barrier, their captain and head of bell boy are very fluent though.

Will revisit if i am staying in Osaka again.

We arrived about 2:30pm for check in, only to be told they could not find our reservation. They eventually found it and then asked us for hotel vouchers. We did not have any, our holiday was pre paid through an agent and we had documentation indicating this was our confirmation. This was sorted out, then we were asked to wait until 3:00pm when the room would be ready. However all the Japanese tourists seem to be checking in and my husband asked to see the manager.
On some discussions with the manager, he kindly gave us an upgrade for all the inconvienance.
We were placed in the tower wing in the green rooms on the 20th floor, this room is amazing. Nicely decorated with a modern contemporary feel. Big and spacious room, with a nice seating area. Flat screen tv with English channels, free WI FI. The bonus is a massage chair and a mechanical bull. Not sure why the mechanical bull but it is good for a laugh.
The bathroom is well equipped and very clean and modern.
We have had afternoon tea in the lounge area, there is a non smoking and smoking area. Very pleasant table we were directed to in front of the gardens. We have booked one of the twenty restaurants in this hotel this evening. The concierge have been very helpful in planning our next few days. The rough start was sorted out quickly and efficiently signs of a good hotel
Looking forward to the next four days at this hotel.

Room Tip: If you can request the green rooms you will be pleased

I often stay at this Hotel in Osaka as it is central, clean and has a nice bar inside linked to a famous Japanese artist. The rooms both standard and superior are well maintained and have been slowly updated over the years. Cable in the room is reasonable and teh wifi in the foyer is good. The hotel is close to Osaka restaurants and bar area which is woth expereiencing.
A good hotel full recomended.

Room Tip: Make sure you visit the Leach Bar

It's a nice clean hotel, but not comtemporary & modern. There isnt any amenity around expect a 24 hour mini mart about 100m away. Room is clean and spacious. Breakfast is good, offering western and japanese.

We spent one night in may 2012 and were extremely impressed with the level of service received. The concierge staff were extremely helpful with recommendations and suggestions on each occasion we approached them.
The hotel also provided a buffet breakfast and free wifi which was well appreciated
Although the hotel is not central, there is sufficient transport and a free shuttle that more than make up for this.

Really great value, by far the best of the various places I've been to in Japan. The rooms feel a bit more spacious than others I've been to in Japan. Note that this is not near the subway (the one across the street is a specific line that does not connect to the subway). There is a very well-run bus that goes every 6 to 15 minutes to Osaka station. I used that a lot.

This hotel is dated but was quite obviously constructed with no expense spared back in the early bubble economy years of the late 1970s. Hence it is still in good condition with an impressive lobby, superbly attentive staff/concierge and fairly good views of the city if you get a room facing east above the 10th floor. Try and stay in the Tower Wing for slightly larger rooms and more expansive views of Umeda and northern Osaka.

I didn't try any of the 40-odd restaurants in the hotel but had coffee in the charming lobby with waterfall, stream running through it. This was expensive (£9) but worth it for a one off.

The main concern I had about this hotel prior to booking was its location. It is on the western end of Nakanoshima, where a large part of Osaka City is administered from... City Hall, Japan Mint and Bank of Japan Kansai branch are located to the east. These are some of the few old western-style buildings in Osaka which survived WW2 so worth more than a cursory glance!

However, this is a good 20 minute walk from Umeda, 10 minutes from lobby to the nearest underground station (Higobashi line) and 15 minutes from Yotsubashi (Midosuji line) There is a brand new station (Keihan Nakanoshima line) directly opposite the hotel where you can get to Kyoto in 50 minutes.

Crucially, the hotel offers a very smoothly run, exclusive shuttle limousine bus service between the hotel which has a frequency of every 8-15 minutes to the Sakurabashi exit of JR Osaka/Umeda station. This turns this hotel into somewhere inaccessible into somewhere perfect for a more relaxing stay.

So, if you don't want to pay the prices of staying at the Hilton or Ritz-Carlton in Umeda, but still want largeish rooms, good views, stay in this charming, albeit dated 1970s hotel. However, if you want to be near all of the nightlife, probably better to stay in Namba or if you are on business and have strictly no time, stay in Umeda.

Travel times (from hotel lobby):
Kyoto station - 60 minutes with Super Rapid Express, 45 minutes with Shinkansen
Kobe station - 45 minutes
Nara - 1 hour

Hiroshima - easily do-able on a day trip
Himeji - 1.5 hours with shinkansen

Tokyo - 3.5 hours with Nozomi shinkansen service, 4 hours for Hikari service.

Taxi fares (post 11pm)
- Namba (1,500-2,000 yen)
- Umeda/JR Osaka station (1,500 yen)

I'd stay here again if I wasn't on a rushed trip around Japan.

Room Tip: Tower Wing for better views. If you don't smoke, specify a NON-smoking room on a NON-smoking flo...
