“Good location but no wifi”
Reviewed March 22, 2013

This hotel was ideal as 2 minute walk to the office, but no wifi although did bring a portable set up to the room but it just didn't connect. As always in Japan staff very attentive. Room service food was below average and just didn't want to try the restaurant. Big bonus was the lovely pastry shop around back.

Great hotel for business. Was perfect location for my business meetings in the tower opposite. Standard of service, cleanliness etc great as is typical in Japan. Nothing was too much trouble. Had very good food in the Japanese restaurant in hotel (6th floor).

I am a SPG fans and certainly try to live in the Starwoods hotel. There seems 3 hotels in Osaka while St Regis is too expensive for me (and I later found that that hotel is located at the center of Osaka, which is good location).

Westin is near the Umeda station, which is the center of all the Osaka transport (with mainly railways and subway and shuttle to Tokyo, airport, etc). However, the hotel is about 10-15mins walk from the Umeda station [if you know how to walk, it takes me a few days to learn how to walk]. The map provided in the official website is not very good illustration (or I'm a bad map reader) of how to get to the shuttle bus stop, and there is no clear sign of the Westin shuttle (however, there is quite a number of shuttle in that place).

Living in Westin is quite a pleasant stay, the G/F restaurant breakfast buffet is nice. As a platinum member you can add around 450 Yen for upgrading the club buffet breakfast to the G/F restaurant. It's so lovely and with plenty of selections.

The services is nice for this hotel , however, the staff English level seems very limited. It's pretty hard to communicate with the staff on your needs.

I especially like the amenity in the room (upgraded to executive rooms), they've a nice packaging shaver for men and a small shiesido kit for ladies.

Room Tip: I like the room with the view of the river, you can bother the front desk to ask.

This is the first Westin hotel built in Japan. There is a courtesy shuttle from the JR subway station to pick you up to take you to the hotel. At the hotel, a man carries a sign in the lobby, and rings a bell when the shuttle is available to take you to the JR station. Only if you a platinum member, the fitness center is free to use the equipment, and locker room. There is a child care room on the same floor for guests to leave their children when they are at work or busy at meetings. There is a Japanese, Chinese, and a somewhat European cafe called Amadeus there. For Platinum guests, breakfast is served complimentary in the Executive lounge, and the afternoon you can get tea, and soft drinks, and in the evening there is a happy hour when free alcoholic drinks are served along with some food. On the higher floors the internet does not work very well, it would be better to use your laptop in the lobby.
The Osaka attraction the Floating Garden Observatory is right in back of the hotel.

I had a one night stay here in February 2013 on business. I arrived quite late (21:00) and left fairly early (8:00) so the bare minimum occupancy from me. I am a platinum member with SPG, so the following review reflects that.

The hotel is a short walk from Osaka station (8 minutes or so -look for the tunnel that leads to the hotel, otherwise you have to walk the long way around like I did) and is situated in a very impressive building.

The good
An upgrade to a nice executive room (but no suite upgrade unfortunately)
Good toiletries (including a great schick razor -I presume this is some kind of cross-marketing effort but very much appreciated)
Two bottles of complimentary water
Fast wired Internet
Club lounge with nice views with breakfast, evening drinks, etc (continental breakfast in main restaurant or full buffet for +500 yen)
The lounge breakfast very impressive: salad, bacon, breads, cereal
Pyjamas!
Great shower and water pressure
Two newspapers -one in the evening on arrival and another in the morning

The bad
The hotel is a bit far from the station. I think there is a complimentary shuttle but it doesn't seem worth it. At the same time, it seems a bit isolated.
Bathroom was a bit small and had no windows -slightly cramped feel
The front desk staff, while very efficient, were completely unsmiling when I checked in and out

Overall
This is a very solid hotel for a business stay in Osaka. I stayed here last year with no status and wasn't as impressed, so this may be a case of them treating plats particularly well. I will certainly be back -have a stay booked for April.

This is a very good hotel especially since I was upgraded to a suite on arrival which was huge and very clean and modern. Hotel has good facilities even though they charge for the gym which is strange since it is rubbish! Otherwise breakfast and bar are very good with really welcoming staff who were always happy to help.

The Hotel is OK but I refuse to stay at a Starwood hotel again until they reverse their policy of charging for Internet. When paying $500 a night I expect the basics like water, electricity and Internet.

Rooms are not even wifi enabled although when called customer relations they were able to provide a router.
