“Wonderful view on Osaka Castle”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 16, 2013

Hotel is located near Osaka jo koen JR station. There are famous Osaka Castle and big park in front of the hotel. You may enjoyed a river cruise from the park aqua pier that is in 50 m from the hotel. The rooms are comfortable. Staff is kind and high-skilled.

Room Tip: Castle and park view rooms on the higher floor are better.

Stayed six nights during a business trip. The hotel provides everything you can expect from a 4-5 star hotel. All in all a good stay, even though the hotel is aging, and would benefit by an interior update

I stayed here for a business trip last week. Although I was annoyed that I got bumped into a smoking room even though our admin reserved non smoking, the hotel made up for it with a superior double room with a nice view of the area, including the Osaka Castle. Although considered a smoking room, the smell was tolerable, especially once I left the room window open (which I did anyway, since the air conditioner didn't appear to be working). You won't find any shows with English dialogue here. Even American movies are dubbed in Japanese, so bring your own entertainment. Rooms have wireless wifi, but breakfast is not included in the room rate. Meals at the hotel start at about $35 for breakfast at the Azalea, for example, although there is a tea service for less than $30. The hotel is conveniently located close to three train stations, Osaka Business Park, Osaka-joen, and Kyobashi. The first two are about a block away, while the last is about 2 or 3, depending on the platform you're headed to. The IMP plaza is across the street from the rear of the hotel, where breakfast, lunch and dinner can be had on the ground and third floors. An annex mall connected by a sky bridge also has additional restaurants with wider selections. There's several convenience stores in the malls, with prices pretty much standardized. Only the offered products and variety varies. Sunkust store appears to have the best selection. Daiei Department and grocery is also close by, near the Kyobashi train station. While one can take the train from KIX airport, I recommend using the hotel's shuttle service for a bit more (less walking, and no train transfers needed). And if you're a runner of any sort, there are jogging paths the concierge would be happy to tell you about. The trail to Osaka Castle is an easy mile walk to its front doors. Don't forget to get your pictures taken with a kimono or samurai outfit for about 300 yen ($4), for each costume. The concierge is very helpful with maps, directions and even called Yodobashi Camera for me, to find out where I needed to go to get some toy robots I was buying for the kids, and checked if they were in stock. Now that's service. Oh, and if you don't mind the provided body wash that smells like dear old dad's pomade, then don't bring your own. If this became a totally smoke free hotel, and breakfast came with the room, it would be perfect.

Osaka is an enigma to any Western traveller who does not speak Japanese. Trying to find the hotel without taking a taxi is therefore close to impossible. However, once found, it presents itself as a huge building block next to the "Castle" (which in fact is a rather recent reconstruction). The location is therefore nice if you want to visit the castle or the surrounding park, or if you need to go to the Osaka Jo-Hall for some event. Other than that, it's not really near anything. A 5 minute walk takes you to the nearest subway station, which provides easy access to the main train and subway lines.
While the hotel looks rather new, some rooms are not. I was in a standard room which was spacious (not a given in Japan) but it had definitely seen better days. It was officially non-smoking, but still there was a definite smell of smoke.
Breakfast was plenty and varied. I also used the dry cleaning service, which went well.

Stayed in a junior suite for 6 days which was extremely spacious and well laid out for functionality. Service all over the entire hotel is the best I've ever experienced anywhere n a long time. All staff go out of their way to meet your evey need in the shortest timeframe. Cleanliness especially in the rooms is impeccable. To the extent that the hand held shower is placed in the exact same position each and every day so that it doesn't accidentally spill water on you when you open the tap, I guess. Heated toilet seats and good quality internet connectivity in the rooms. Breakfast is a little bland with limited choices on offer but great pork steak sandwich and excellent service in the bar on the ground floor. Overall an excellent memorable stay. Keep up the service excellence!!

Room Tip: Suites are very spacious but quite pricey at $650 plus which is normal for Japan I guess

Although the New Otani's service was very good, the rooms are clean but dingy and old compared to an average American Marriott or Hilton. Our first room was not a non-smoking king (as requested during the reservation process) and it took almost an hour of haggling with the front desk to actually get a non-smoking room with a king sized bed. Each room is sprayed with something after each guest's stay that is supposed to mask the smoke smell. Surprise! It doesn't. Apparently there are very few true non-smoking rooms in this hotel so if you plan to stay here and you're sensitive to smoke, be vigilant about your requests.

We tried almost all the restaurants in this hotel and they were all quite nice but very expensive. The lobby is attractive and the breakfast plentiful.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of Osaka Castle!

Stayed at this hotel 7 nights last week and felt pretty underwhelmed by the whole experience. On a positive note, the rooms are of a good size and very clean but the fixtures and fittings are definitely showing their age - lots of beige plastic!
The location is close to the castle but away from anything else, very few bars, restaurants, etc. unless you want to eat in a shopping mall.
The biggest downsides for me were the fact that the 'extras' were all so expensive. I arrived early at about 9-30am after travelling all through the night and was very pleased and surprised to be told that my room would be ready in 10 minutes. The only downside was that wanted to charge me a 100% surcharge for this privilege. No offer of an area such as a gym for us to have a shower and change.
They have one of the oldest gyms i can remember seeing for a long while (vibrating stomach belts?) but still asked that you pay approx £12 per day to use it.
Breakfast is extra and worked out at approx £30 per day, although i was offered a 'special deal' whereby it would only be £22. I travel a great deal through work and expect to sometimes pay extra for breakfast, but £30?
Poor value for money, would not stay again.
