This place gives a history from the 15th century to the post WW2 era of the livelihood of Osaka, Japan. It was really cool to learn about the history and see how people lived. My parents had a ball taking pictures with mannequins. There were so many models of houses, villages, lifestyles, etc. it's great for history buffs and for families. It is quite clean. From the 10th floor, you can see the Osaka Castle which is a gigantic fortress! It's a must see museum!

After seeing Osaka castle, I walked to this museum, which shares the building with NHK studios. As an added bonus, you can view Japanese progamming live on the first floor studio before you enter the museum. The museum, itself, did not have English translations on the exhibits. The exhibits were very detailed and artistic though. I'd recommend getting the audio tour. You can get a discounted ticket (about 100 yen off) if you combine the Osaka Castle and Museum of History ticket OR if you purchase a multi-pass train ticket and show it at the museum prior to paying admission.

This museum is located right by Osaka Castle and is a bit of an underrated gem. First, it's important to understand that it's not a museum in the sense that you will see historical artifacts. It is more of a diorama exhibition. Make sure you get the audio guide otherwise the english is sparse. The exhibits are very well done and spread over 4 floors at the top of the modern building beginning with a mannequin display of Naniwa Palace when Osaka served as Japan's first capital in medieval times and ends with exhibits on the city's shopping arcades of the Showa Period. You will also get excellent views of Osaka castle. Well worth the diversion after visiting the castle.

The museum provides a nice history of Japan with English descriptions on the exhibits. You start on the top floor, where they show a video in Japanese only, and then work your way down. Some of the exhibits are a little simplistic (cardboard cutouts showing "life in early Japan," for example), but there's a lot of detail also. As you go down from the top floor, you get a great view of Osaka castle through the stairway windows (the museum is located diagonally across the street from a corner of the castle). It's appropriate for both kids and adults, and takes 2 hours to go through without lingering too much, though you can spend more time and go through each exhibit in detail.

As you can see in photos, this is an unusual looking building. You start from the top floor and work your way down using escalators, which I found quite unusual. I was struck their superbly constructed scale models of old Osaka era, and certainly, you do not need to know Japanese to appreciate those. But for such a big beautiful building, the collection is a bit spartan. But since it is across the street from the Osaka Castle, why not make a quick stop?
