“Calling all Foodies!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 8, 2014

Yes, the market is small. Yes, it is somewhat hard to find. And yes, it's a very ordinary market for a local Osaka resident. With all this being said, anyone who loves food must go!!!

Dotonburi has a ton of great food and restaurants, but if you want to get some really good food, go to Kuromon Ichiba market. They have fugu sashimi, apollo strawberries, kobe beef sashimi, artisan mochi, and pretty much every sea creature grilled or fried on a stick. Just go with an empty belly and leave happy.

“The must have Japanese Curry”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 20, 2014

If you enter the market from Sennichimae Dori side, slowly walks to straight ahead. On the way you get to see and experience the most authentic Japanese market with the fresh fish, meat, produce and many other products. Approixmately after 5 minutes of slow walk, towards the end of the main walk through (you can see the place getting less crowded), there is a great little curry place sitting at the left hand side corner/intersection.

The whole place is tiny with a long counter only, I won't even consider calling it a "restaurant", it is just a little eatery place with an old couple selling Japanese curry. No fancy interior, no romantic atmosphere, no 3 michelin star menu. You sit down and pick your Japanese curry out of 3 main - Pork schnitzel, Beef and Deep fried prawns. The lovely couple will serve you a glass of water, local japanese radio, and probably the most down to earth local food in the whole city.

Not to mention the price is quite reasonable, between 600~800 yen per dish, with a reasonable portion. The place is also fairly busy, it seems to be a popular place for the locals.

If you stay some where close to the market, or had enough of Yoshinoya and ticket machine restaurants.

GIve this little curry place a try!

“Great market”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 19, 2014

I visted Kuromon Ichiba with my family in November 2013.

Plenty of fresh food, fruits & vegetables.

Sashimi prices are relatively cheaper then restaurants.

We ate a whole big Hokkaido crab for JPY3,800. It is much cheaper to eat Hokkaido crab in the market then at Dotombori.

There are many types of food at this market. You buy & eat along the way.

There is a local supermarket that opens 24 hours.

If you are looking for a bargain please come to Kuromon Ichiba after 5pm. Some food & fruits are given discounts.

We enjoy ourselves eating at the market. Great eating experience.

“Great place to feel local”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 6, 2014

It's just a stone throw away from our hotel, hotel hillarys.

On the way to Nihonbashi station, we walked through this local market. It caters for both local and tourists. You will be able to see plenty of local food and souvenirs.

There is a big supermarket where they sell a lot of food and fruits. We bought a big persimmon for only 100 yen. It;s sweet and crunchy. We were regret that we didnt buy more.

for a small amount, you will be able to get the fresh taste of some food like BBQ scallop, oyster, shashimi, omochi, kobe beef, pickle etc.

It worths a visit.

“Ordinary local market”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 1, 2014

I read some good reviews about Kuromon Ichiba and also browsed through their official website. However, it did not turn out to be the same as what I read.

We visited Kaiyukan in the morning and reached Namba station by subway. Asked around for direction but was told that it would take 15-20 min. walk and it sounded so complicated to walk there. So, we took a taxi.

We found a local sushi outlet and had some sushi, sashimi and a mini shabu-shabu at very reasonable price. There are not many stalls as compared to Nishiki Market in Kyoto, although local produce really look attractive being displayed in each stall and the price seem to be reasonable.

Toilet is available here and surprisingly there is also fee wifi near toilet area.

Not a 'must visit' place in Osaka unless you really have spare time and wish to see a local market.
