“Great character, good food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 21, 2012

This is a small and funky little place (make reservations if going at night). A bit of an institution in Shinsaibashi. I liked how they included Kabocha pumpkin with my meal alongside the more standard fare (beans, guacamole, tomatoes, etc.).

Mexican food is generally priced quite a bit higher in Japan than other parts of the world, but we found this place quite reasonable, spending about $22 for a lunch for 2. Recommended!

“Best Mexican I've had in Japan but you're gonna pay for the pleasure”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 28, 2011

Really good restauraunt for an out of towner coming into the big city looking for a little civilisation. Very hard to fault almost anything about it, service, location, food, atmosphere and cocktails with legs. Theres also live music and a cool cave-like feel to the place. The only downside is that becaue of its location, it's on the expensive side (though not insultingly so). You gotta consider the fact that you're eating in the very centre of the city. Afternoon cocktails are discounted as I recall and make for a a nice anaesthetic to the price.

“Some of the best Mexican cuisine there is!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 4, 2011

I first discovered El Pancho in 2004 and have been visiting ever since, and I have made a dozen visits so far. Never have I been disappointed with food or service. This was my first visit in many years and I'm glad to see not a thing has changed, even right down to the great (and long) happy hour.

You would never suspect finding such authentic, excellent tasting Mexican food in the Shinsaibashi district of Osaka in the concrete jungle of Japan. But this place has been serving since 1979 and should meet or exceed your expectations if you enjoy Mexican cuisine.

Located on the 8th floor of the Shinsaibashi tower, you take a small elevator up and once you step in the restaurant, you will, for a moment, forget you are in Osaka...until they seat you and serve you in Japanese! Don't worry, they have English menus and speak enough English to complete transactions.

I can't say enough about this place. The décor is legendary and tells the tale of thousands of satisfied customers who felt the need to leave a message on the walls. People have written all over the walls, and there is Mexican collectibles all over the place that give it an authentic feel.

The food is excellent, not the westernized version Mexican that many people are used to...it is authentic and delicious! They have drinks that are off the Acapulco beach, of course Corona and Dos Equis beer, vegetarian meals and I'm pretty sure they make their own chips on site.

Try to get there between 12 and 5pm for "happy hour"...or happy hours I guess...either way it is a great time with friends and a great deal.
