“Sorely needs an upgrade”

Osaka Science Museum

Took our 3-year-old boy for a day out last year (2012). The interactive displays get quite repetitive and boring after about 15 minutes. The displays and the interior look rather drab and run-down, like they haven't had any maintenance or upgrades since the 1980s. The planetarium was nothing special, either. Sorry to say, I wouldn't recommend this museum for adults or children.

This is actually a good museum, with a planetarium. There are many things to try inside the museum, and I think they will entertain the kids.

Went on a rainy afternoon, probably would have been better served visiting the Art Gallery just next door. The displays were interesting, but with minimal english in the signs, so couldn't really appreciate as well. Did the planetarium as well, but also only in Japanese commentary. Wouldn't recommend a visit unless you are in the area and have young children to entertain.

Very much child-oriented, although me and my friend did have a blast - maybe we're just big kids at heart! Many interactive exhibits.

Everything is in Japanese! There is a planetarium, but we didn't bother to watch the show as the lady at the desk informed us that there was no translation. Fortunately, you buy a separate ticket for the show so we didn't feel like we had missed out. Descriptions of the exhibits are all in Japanese, but most have diagrams and are pretty self-explanatory - bring someone which a good knowledge of basic science with you to explain stuff and you're golden!

There is a café on-site but it is more like a mini-restaurant - it looked nice but wasn't really within our budget (not much was), although it did also serve drinks and cakes.

Lots of enthusiastic Japanese kids tearing around, but it wasn't crowded and the acoustics are good enough that it didn't feel loud.

Reasonable price, would definitely recommend to anyone with kids or who wants a bit of fun messing around with treadmill-powered televisions and the like! All in all an enjoyable hour, bring kids or a good knowledge of Japanese and you'll probably end up staying a lot longer :)
