“Very classy and comfortable”

Having arrived here from a 6-to-a-room youth hostel previously, we were wowed by the overall classiness of this place. A cross between a hostel, hotel and a capsule, First Cabin provided individual rooms which housed a spacious bed, 32 inch Sony Bravia TV at the foot of the bed and all sorts of amenities such as a set of pyjamas, body sponge, fluffy towels, slippers and more. The shared bathroom had an array of branded face care products and there was even a dry sauna and a lovely hot tub for soaking. You just have to be oblivious to all the other naked women around!

This place is a great option for women travellers, as there are separate sections for men and ladies. While the room areas were deadly quiet and quite dark (think a dimmed-out first class cabin on a plane, which is the overall concept of the place), there is a common lounge area for get-togethers and enough vending machines to provide a variety of beverages. We did not have time to explore the lounge / bar which served alcohol and snacks as well as the business area on the upper floor. Then again, we were there for leisure.

Location-wise, First Cabin is great as it is connected to the Namba Station - on the Midosuji Subway Line side. Just across the road are the lively areas of Shinsaibashi and Dotonbori, which are great to explore in the evening. From Namba main station, one can get a train straight to Kansai Airport.

Our only complaint about First Cabin? No wifi available for foreigners. We think there was wifi, but only seemed available to those on Softbank and there was a cable for laptops. Otherwise, this would have been a perfect place to stay especially at the price of S$50 a night, booked on Agoda.

The time I checked in I noticed a tray full od small cardboxes, like matchboxes with kanjis written on it. I was puzzled and I inquired about what was it. They told that they were earplugs that thye give for free as an ammenity. I niticed that very first moment that the sleep quiality wasn´t going to be good. And I was right ...
It is a funny and strange place with shelves of manga comics around the cabins and a very futuristic design. The capsule are wide enough but you only have a small place to lock your things with a key since the cabins do not have a lock, just a hard curtain to close it. Because of that, I have to leave my luggage in the front desk. It´s completely safe of course, but just uncortable if you are in your capsule but your luggage in the reception area.
On the good side are the great comunal baths with a spa and the location, near Namba St. a 2 minutes walk, specially good if you, like me , was to take a flight the next day and wanted a quick and smooth transfer to the KIX airport via the Nankai Rapid train service. It is also near some great shopping and eating arcades so the location was excellent.
So I wouldn´t mind sleep there again for a night before taking a flight but I would not recommend it for longer stays in Osaka

Very cool hotel for a young, single traveler. Pod-style rooms, shared bathrooms (clean), high-tech, secure, reasonably priced and great location by Namba station. Would definitely recommend and stay again.

Swish curtained off rooms in what appears to be a converted office building right in the heart of Namba, very convenient for the subway and the entertainment areas. There was plenty of room in the 'cabin' with a comfy bed and big TV, separate wc's and showers were in good order and the staff were pleasant and helpful. Between 10am and 5pm each day the lift is inexplicably out of order so because of the size and design of the place it involves much pacing up and down dimly lit corridors to get from one floor to another.

Pricewise I had a Japanese friend that arranged this for me and found a 2-night discount that most non-japanese speakers would not have found. In general it's an interesting place to stay, very different to most hotels, if a little odd for the foreign traveller, however most of Japan seems odd to us.

The location is very convenient - just above the Namba station with its multiple subway lines. Use exit 21 and it comes up beside Subway Sandwiches, which is right next to the hotel. You can also access the building directly from the subway by taking exit 13, and then the elevator to the third floor.

The cabins are self-contained fiberglass units with just enough room for a bed and small table. There's very little soundproofing, so you hear people moving around in the cabins and coming and going from the floor. There's more privacy than a capsule hotel or hostel, but also shared bathrooms like both of those other options.

I'd avoid the place on a weekend night - there are people coming and going all night.

Overall, it's a unique experience. However, you can get a private room in a business hotel for the same price or less, so it's no bargain.

Room Tip: Get a room along the outside wall, so you don't have other cabins facing you and don't have...

Understand that this is NOT a 'traditional' hotel... I would put it between a capsule hotel and a youth hostel.
As per babaa's review, she covered the essense well.
Still spotlessly clean, as if opened yesterday! All amenities were great, couldn't have asked for anything more. I used the bath (usual japanese style), it was divine. (also open 24hrs, some places the bath is only open during the evening).
All information is provided in english/ japanese (and I think koren/ chinese too maybe). I think some staff speak english (I have enough japanese to have not needed).

The 'cabins' are not completely enclosed, so you need to be aware of your noise level, and you may hear others walking about etc. Be aware if you have lots of plastic bags... I felt bad crinkling mine!
Drawer under the bed is not very deep, wouldn't fit my large (though almost empty) pack.

my only complaint about the place was the heat. I stayed in winter, 8-10outside. Inside was like a sauna, easily 25degrees. There is central air con in the cabins, but minimal control (off, low, high) and the vent was tiny... no way adequate to cool the cabin. That lead to a terrible sleep for me. I'd rather a little cooler and be able to heat/ use blankets. (I realise that, in general, japanese women are always very cold, but I believe the heating was still on far too high).

I would definitely stay again, and look forward to more 'First Cabins' opening around Japan!

Location: Excellent! Directly above Namba station. The exit brings you directly up to the hotel. Everything else is right outside your door step, in and around Namba station; shopping/eating, everything.

Hotel: Very modern, and clean starting from the elevator up. It's exactly what you see in their website pictures. Ladies & gentleman's rooms are separated. So not exactly a good place for couples to stay. Perfect for single travelers on short stays. The whole place as I mentioned, is squeaky clean even in the relaxing area & bath rooms and shower area. First class cabin room size is perfect for one person. Unless you have no baggage, otherwise, I wouldn't recommend the business cabin. There's a lockable drawer beneath the bed for your valuables, a mirror on the wall for the ladies, 32" Sony Bravia in ea. "room", a personal headset so you can crank up the TV volume and an alarm clock that is just loud enough to wake yourself but not the others (unless you are a very VERY light sleeper - I did not use it, but heard it from next door, only because I was already awake myself).

Amenities: Bathrooms were clean and tidy every time I used it. Showers were the typical Jap style communal. There's also a sauna and baths available which I didn't have time to enjoy. The vanity area was what impressed me. Clean/hair-free, with a mirror to ea. sink, and cleansing products/cotton pads/Q-tips for ladies to use. Certainly didn't expect that in a capsule hotel. There's also a "chat/relax area", where beanie seatings and coffee tables are available for guests to chill and read the provided manga or magazines. Although the mangas were very old, but hey, is the thought that counts. Plus, the magazines ARE new.

The only down side is, again, if you are a very very light sleeper, you might get woken up by the other occupants who sleep & wake at different times than yours. But isn't that to be expected in any capsule hotels anyway?

Overall stay was a great experience. Very interesting place. The different design & concept is what brought me there. It's definitely not the cheapest stay around, but for the quality environment and great location, I had to give it a go. I certainly wouldn't mind trying other hotels in Osaka as there're so many choices out there. But if I couldn't find anything decently priced with good reviews and an excellent location like this next time. I would surely return to First Cabin for a short few days' stay.

To ones out there who're not so sure about the typical Japanese style ("crawl in") capsule hotel, and want a little more personal space and quality, this is the place!
