This is quite a good place to stay. It is fairly quiet even though it is in the middle of the city. The rooms are clean and tidy and the people are very nice. Good value for money.

The hotel is quite good in terms of:

price - we found it to be reasonable

cleanliness - yes, it was quite clean. Rooms were cleaned everyday. Airconditioning (heater) needed a bit of cleaning but it was fine nonetheless. Bathrooms were clean and towels replaced regularly. bathrooms come with a mini bath tub.

breakfast - although they served the same continental breakfast everyday, we found it to be quite convenient to be eating downstairs. and considering Japan is not a cheap place to have your regular pastries and drinks, the buffet breakfast was helpful to the budget.

sleep quality - since the location is away from the busy areas of osaka, you can sleep well without so much noise disturbance.

service - good service. staff can speak a considerable amount of necessary english.

The only drawback on this hotel is:

location - not too conveniently located.

Overall, even with a bit of a walk, we still found this hotel to be a good place to have quiet peaceful sleep after a full day's exploration of Osaka.

Firstly, I would like to say that all I usually need from hotel is clean bed and room, hot water and Internet access - these (together with price and location) are my main criteria for rating hotel value. I don't care if hotel has pool, room service, fancy rooms and lobby or superb view. I want to do some sight-seeing during day and use hotel just for undisturbed sleep and save storing for my stuff. Family Inn Fifty's meet all my main points, only drawback could be location and price.

We have been travelling through Japan for two weeks and staying in this hotel just for one night (because we have not been able to book any lodging in Kyoto for saturday night, April 10th 2010). We have tried to book via phone, but the price was 2.000 yens higher than online book with credit card (10% paid in advance, rest on place - also using credit card), therefore we used our favourite hostel booking site just one night before and it works.

Our room was good enough for given price (7.500yen/night) and consist of double bed, sofa (where could potentially sleep third person) and small bathroom. Our room wasn't brand new but it was well maintained and clean. Included breakfast was fine, freshly baked bakery stuff (and small cakes) were really yummy. Internet is available in the lobby (they have some computers and wifi). We managed to reach some wifi also in our room, but I believe it was some opened (unsecured) net outside of the hotel.

Hotel staff was nice and english speaking. They were able to store our baggage as we came about two hours before check-in.

Hotel is not located in superb place (no sights around), you have to weave your way through surrounding streets (or take a bus) to the closest subway station. But neighbouring is very quiet - no pachinko or train behind windows means that you will probably have untroubled sleep.

How to get there: From Osaka train station take bus 88 to Tosabori 2-chrome (or ask in police kiosk on bus terminal, which bus is going to Tempozan area).

I stayed at Family Inn Fifty's in Osaka in 2007. I really liked the pre-recorded American popular music from the 1950's and 1960's that they play in the lobby!! I'd been in Japan for almost a month, and I really missed the English language, so this was a welcome cultural immersion in a Japanese image of America. Not surprisingly, I was the only non-Japanese guest.

Staff were very kind and helpful. I arrived early, and they were happy to store my luggage. Then at check-in time, the staff helped me navaigate the automated check-in machine. As for my stored luggage, they had already moved it to my room! The next morning, when I left the hotel to explore the city, one of the staff ran after me with an English map of Osaka, just to be sure I had one!

The room decor was a light-hearted homage to 1950's American nostalgia. The bathroom tile was yellow, green, and black, a typical 1950's American color scheme. My room was furnished with a freeform-shaped coffee table, a headboard in the same design, and an aluminum "malt shop" table and chair. (See the photos on the hotel's website.)

The room was larger than at most Japanese business hotels in this price range. Everything was very clean. But this is just a quirky two-hotel chain created by an architect with a vision, so you won't experience the standard design and service protcols that you'd find at the Toyoko Inn chain. They installed ceramic tile in a fiberglass bathroom unit, and in my room there were a couple of cracked tiles from this problematic construction detail.

Frankly, the breakfast buffet was simpler and had less variety than you'd find at Tokoyo Inn or Comfort Hotel in Japan. But I was here to experience a non-formula hotel.

When I go back to Osaka, I will stay here again. I enjoyed this unique and fun cross-cultural experience--it is truly a Japanese homage to 1950's American popular music and design.

By the way, there is a city subway station near the hotel, but I found it easier to walk to the main train station.
