“Decent”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 7, 2012

Conveniently located near a couple subways, and the Shin-Imamiya JR loop station. The neighborhood is not great, but not unsafe at all. The hotel does have a gate they lock every night. My room smelt not so great, but there was a window that I left open so the smell dissipated. Bathrooms on every floor, not extremely clean, but not dirty either. The showers are downstairs, and are clean. They have free bike rental, and the staff is very nice. Also, if you buy food/drink at the family mart down the block they give you 10% cash back at the hotel. All-in-all, decent place to stay for pretty cheap, I will most likely stay elsewhere when I return.

Room Tip: Make sure you specify smoking/non smoking when you book

We stayed there for two nights. The staff is very very helpful, friendly, and ready to provide with everything which is in their scope of capability.
The price is excellent. I believe I would not be able to find cheaper one. Indeed, the fact that the showers are located only on the first floor is not that comfortable, however, for the price you pay it is one of the best place.

Room Tip: Try not to get a room in front of the toilet and the lift.

To begin with the bad, the room smelled of smoke when we arrived. We asked to switch to another room, but none were available. Nothing at the hotel felt clean, from our bedding to the bathrooms. To shower, we had to go from our room on the 6th floor to the bottom floor. Our room (608) was directly in front of the elevator, and the walls/door were thin, so noise carried when people were talking in front of the elevator.

The good qualities far outweighed the bad, in our opinion. We booked a double, which was about $53US/night, and which was a decent size.

The staff were very kind, helpful, and patient with us, though their English was limited.

The shared kitchen was equipped with two hot plates, pots, pans, bowls, utensils, knives, etc. like other places we stayed, but Mikado also provided many seasonings and even free snacks!

Also provided were free bicycles, slippers, robes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap and shampoo in the shower, and use of a public bath (separate times designated for men's and women's us, baggage storage, discount train tickets, coin laundry. There was a small flat screen TV (though it seemed more like a computer monitor) and a mini fridge in the room, as well as a small table, folded futon, and clothing rack.

Wifi worked great the whole time (a router on each floor), and many computers are available for free use in the lobby.

Though we could hear other guests in the hallway, our room was overall very quiet, as it's not on a main street.

It was easy to get to and from the train station.

I stayed for 3 nights in mid April 2012 and paid less than 2000 yen per night! That includes a single bed complete with TV, VHS, free wi-fi, air-conditioning and a yukata (bathing robe)! The single room was kind of small, but considering a capsule would cost twice as much and I would be compacted into a space no bigger than a coffin, it was money well spent for me. The bed was comfortable enough and the place was relatively clean, though not as speck-less as one might expect. I'm not saying the place is filthy, it's far from it! Toilet seats were clean (and electrically warmed for extra comfort) and shower rooms were very clean as well. I did not try the communal baths though as the timing was never right. My only nit-pick about the cleanliness is that the toilet on my floor was kind of gloomy and damp, though there wasn't anything unsightly or smelly.

The staff also speak pretty good English and they were more than willing to assist me. I had no issue with the smell of cigarette or whatsoever. The hotel is near Family Mart convenience stores and also a 100yen shop to get your late night snacks. Shinsekai is also a 10-min walk away and you could easily visit the Tsutenkaku tower to get an excellent view of the city's skyline. The location may not be as up-market as downtown Umeda or Namba, but Shin-imamiya does not deserve its infamous reputation, I believe. Yes there were a couple of homeless men when I traversed to and fro the station but they seemed the least bit interested in interacting with a foreigner like myself. In fact, Shin-imamiya lies on the JR loop line, is just one stop away to Tennoji station (of which you could easily connect to Nara and beyond), has a direct train to JR-Namba (perfect for JR Pass holders) and is one of the only 2 stops in Osaka (the other being Namba) on the Nankai line bound for Koyasan!

With that said, I would recommend Hotel Mikado for anyone who wishes to be on a budget and is adventurous enough to experience the less glamorous side of Japan. I've had worse in some parts of Europe, really. Saving more on accommodation also means getting to eat more of what Osaka has to offer!

I only stayed one night, and enjoyed my experienced. The staff spoke good english, were very friendly and helpful. The reception area was very inviting. There were often individuals or families eating at the large table after cooking in the small kitchen area. There were computers with internet to use. There were always baskets of free snacks.

Location is excellent, just a couple of mins from a JR line, so easy to explore the city. I did not have an problems with street people and felt totally safe in the neighbourhood.

We paid 5470yen for a western style twin room. It was very spacious with air con, tv, video player, towels, toothbrushes and bathrobes and slippers. I would recommend getting a twin rather than 2 singles as the twin is two single rooms knocked into one and feels very spacious. We had requested a non-smoking room and there was no smell of cigarette smoke.

There are shared toilets on each of the 8 floors. The showers were on the ground floor. I never saw these occupied, I never used them, because the hotel has a traditional Japanese communal bath (free to use). Most of the travellers I saw were Japanese, so they of course opted for the bath, leaving the showers free.

If you want to try the bathing experience while in Japan but are a bit unsure/nervous about how to go about it - stay at this hotel and you have a chance to do it on your own terms. There are separate times for male and female. I went downstairs in my bathrobe, others got changed from their clothes in the locker room that is just inside the main door. You get changed here then walk into the bathroom naked. There is one stand up shower cubicle and 6 stools in front of mirrors with shower heads. You should wash and rinse yourself thoroughly before getting into the bath. The bath is the size of a small swimming pool (do not swim, it is unacceptable). People brush their teeth, wash their hair and all of the body while sat on the stools, I saw several people spend more time doing this than actual time spent in the bath. Some came with friends and spent time chatting and laughing while washing. It is easy to see why the showers were rarely used; this was a warm, friendly environment. Very enjoyable. Don't be nervous, just go for it.

Stayed in Hotel Mikado for 7 nights in November 2011 and was really impressed given the very low price (about $30 NZD per night for a single room). The hotel is about 5 minutes walk from Shin-imamiya station (on the Osaka Loop Line), which makes it really convenient. Some people have commented that the area is a bit dodgy, and to be fair it's not the most pleasant place to walk through at night but I didn't have any problems nor did anyone stop / harass me.

The room itself was quite small (it fits a single bed, a really small desk, a fridge and tv - and not much else), but it was clean, tidy, warm and had air conditioning. Each floor has a shared bathroom (with a couple of toilets and a couple of sinks, but no showers) which was also clean. The only frustrating thing was that the actual showers / proper bathrooms were down on the first floor. That said, even though there were only 3-4 showers, I never had to wait to have one - and again, they were really clean etc.

Customer service was excellent - the staff helped with any questions I had; and the free wifi was a bonus that I wasn't expecting.

Definitely recommend to anyone who wants a cheap (but not rubbish) place to stay in Osaka. It's probably best suited to people who don't expect to spend too much time in their actual hotel, but just see the room as somewhere to sleep after a day of travelling.
