A nice trendy hotel but still with traditional touches that make you feel you are in Japan. Some of the hotel feels a little industrial which may not be to all tastes, but overall quite good.

Note that restaurant openings times are quite strict and room service availability is limited. This is the price to pay compared to staying at a big name chain, but you should be prepared for this as there are limited options for service immediately around the hotel.

Aircon is not individually controlled from rooms. Wasn't a problem for us in march but might be so if you go in summer. Also generally found that staff spoke very limited english.

Chic, funky and friendly with a definite Japanese feel, we loved the Screen on arrival. We were greeted with a welcome drink, loved the suite with white leather sofa, huge bed, big bath tube, Nespresso each morning, bike rental, excellent location... The staff were wonderful and went out of their way to help us book the next leg of our trip to Hiroshima. Excellent!!

it is a good change from the traditional ryokan we stayed on our other night in the city. The boutique hotel is modern and chic. I wont call it luxurious, but our room is huge and has an amazing jacuzzi. Full of modern amenities. Hotel staff are also helpful and provided restaurant recommendations as well as assisting in making reservations. They also have prepared directions to take public transport (buses) to the various shrines and temples in the city. Very convenient and clear.

Room Tip: Each room is different. Book early to avoid disappointment.

A small modern hotel centrally located in Kyoto with easy access to the bus system which is probably the best way of getting around. You get on the at the rear of a bus and exit at the front by the driver. If you intend travelling a lot on the buses it is worth purchasing (from the driver) a pass which once it has been entered into a device on the bus only need to be shown to the drivers on subsequent trips. On the one-day pass just over two trips is the breakeven point.
Our room at the hotel was extremely comfortable witht he bedroom section being a tatami matted area with an extremely comfortable western bed. Facilities in the room included a coffee maker (Nespresso), ethernet internet access, and all other facilities that one would expect in a hotel of this type.
Only negative is that the complicated unit on the toilet (bidet etc) and the air-conditioning controller were all in Japanese without any English translation. This was unlike all the other controls in the room.
This hotel is quite expensive.

Very modern, super clean and large bedrooms. Located very near Kyoto Imperial Palace gardens and walkable to Nijo Castle (20 mins). Staff so keen to please. Small restaurant tries so hard and delivers good food and wine. Within a few minutes walk are some well established bakeries in classical French style where you can breakfast. Oooommm!

We stayed at the Screen for 4 nights. We were booked into a large room but this room was totally designed in black color, same as in the hallways. Refused to stay in this room as was too depressing (one small window)! We got another room the day after facing the front street and temple, which was nice. In general though, the designs looked to us rather cheap and not practical (bathroom is a drama , use all towels you have to cover the tiles when taking a shower).
Skip expensive breakfast here in again a dark area and go for omelette or croissant a few blocks away. Seems for Japan strange to be: but only wireless in the lounge which is ok but not very comfortable. The bar upstairs was open, but no staff... Actually you won't see that many guests in general, saw be couple in 4 days.
Overall, ok, but price wise, I would have expected much better. Would not return but then stay in the Hyatt.
