“Comfortable, quiet and very close to the station”
Reviewed January 30, 2012

We stayed at the Budget Inn as a family with 2 adults and 2 children in November 2011. The hotel is a very short walk from Kyoto station, and is relatively easy to find.

When we arrived we were warmly greeted at the capsule ryokan reception by a girl who spoke perfect english, as she explained all of the necessary information about our hotel, and then walked us back to the budget inn to show us to our room and make sure we were comfortable. Aside from the end of the stay when we dropped off the key, that was the only interaction with the Budget Inn staff that we had (or needed).
As far as the room was concerned, it was comfortable, but unremarkable. Exactly as I expected for the reasonable price that is charged. The bathroom was very small and cramped, with some mould present. The toilet and entryway was similarly dated, but functional, and the living area was big enough to lay out 4 futons, with not a lot of space to spare. The hotel itself was very quiet. We didn't see or hear any other guests, and aside from some noise in the streets outside later in the night as people walked home, it was very quiet.

All in all it is a good hotel, but I don't think I would stay there again. Why I hear you ask? Nothing to do with the hotel itself which was fine, or the service, which was great, but simply the location. The hotel is only a short walk from Kyoto station, so access to trains, taxis and buses is always at hand, but Kyoto station was always insanely crowded (so much so that we avoided the area unless we absolutely had to), and the Budget Inn is simply too far away from the main Shijo shopping districts (Kawaramachi, Teramachi, etc). This meant that dining and shopping options around the hotel were limited unless we were prepared for a long walk or a public transport commute. For this price range, we stayed in another "traditional" style hotel room later in our trip right in the middle of the Shijo shopping district, and the eating, shopping and entertainment options available within a few minutes walk of our front door made the stay far more enjoyable.

The Budget Inn was our 'introduction' to Japan and it didn't disappoint at all. Very like a home away from home. Close enough to Kyoto station but very quiet neighbourhood - we felt like were immediately immersed in Japan. Staff were fantastic - answered all our questions and offerred great advice. Very proficient in English and appreciative of my VERY limited Japanese ! Great value for money and wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

we stayed at Budget Inn 7.5 years ago for our honeymoon. We came again this November with our daughter. The stay was as wonderful as I remembered before. The staff was friendly and helpful. The room was clean and neat. The location was very convenient; since it's close to the Kyoto station, we were able to take various trains and buses, and always got a seat. Again, thank you so much for providing a home in Kyoto. We hope to come again soon.

While in Kyoto, we stayed at both the Budget Inn and Capsule Ryokan and had an excellent experience at both. The staff are very knowledgeable, remarkably proficient in English and willing to help guide you in planning your trip through Kyoto. The price was just about unbeatable for Japan.

Great location - about 7 mins walk from kyoto station. Very clean with all the mod cons..including illuminated automatic toilet seat riser...temed the 'green monster'. However still managed to keep a traditional edge!

Staff very helpful.

Would highly recommend.

They also have a sister hostel...capsule inn. This is a dorm style hostel but with capsules for beds. Much smaller space but cheap and cheerful.

When we arrived late at night and were greeted by friendly staff we felt like we were coming 'home'.

The actual building seemed quite new and our tatami floored Japanese style room was tiny but perfect for us. All we really did was sleep here as we were busy enjoying Kyoto.

The room was super clean though it was small. At the price we were paying we weren't expecting a large room anyway, but seeing how clean and well looked after the place was very comforting.

The room had a tiny kitchenette with a microwave and bar fridge. The room also had an LCD tv on the wall (on which we loved watching the Japanese prank channels!).
There were 5 of us in the room, so by the time we lay our futons down (all the linen was super clean) the entire floor space was covered. Luckily there was a generous sized cupboard to put our luggage.

The bathroom was tiny but had a deep Japanese style bath which we loved as well as a shower.

The room had a tiny balcony and had a/c and heating.

There was also a common laundry downstairs that you could use for a small fee.

When we left for Tokyo the management also very kindly let us keep some luggage downstairs. It was not secured in any way but it was fine and we were very grateful.

We never tried it but there was a service from reception that you could try on traditional style clothing and enjoy sake tasting. There was also a common area downstairs which seemed nice (but we never used as we were travelling with 3 small kids who would love dismantling the area of all of its furnishings).

Would we stay there again? Definately. For the price it was more than we expected (we paid the same price to stay in a shocking place in Tokyo, so staying here made us even more grateful!).

Room Tip: I think all of the rooms may be the same - not sure as we were in a triple room.
