This hotel was excellent! We are a family of 4, and stayed in a Japanese-style room. Room:
The room was spacious (for Japanese standards). The bathroom was tiny, but clean and manageable. The floor is made of tatami mats, and there is also a little sitting area (sun room) with sliding glass doors giving you access to a little garden. You are expected to make your bed every night. This involves removing the futon mattresses from the closet, laying them on the floor, putting on the sheets, pillows, and blankets. There is a tiny refrigerator in the room, and it is stocked daily with bottled water.
Cleanliness:
The room was nice and clean. The staff came in daily to clean, but there is also an option to request just a towel change without cleaning the entire room.
Hotel:
This hotel has a modern feel. The lobby was sparkling clean. The staff were very friendly, and spoke good English. There is a slight cigarette smell when you enter the hotel, but it is because people smoke right outside the main entrance. Once you are up in the room, you can't smell the smoke anymore.
Location:
Excellent!!!! You might be put off when you first arrive, because the hotel is in a small alleyway. However, the location couldn't be any better. The metro is only steps away at the corner of a main intersection (near city hall). While a little hard to find, at first, from the metro, there is an exit with an escalator that leads straight to the nearest corner. There are several bus lines that stop directly in front of the hotel, while others are only a block away. Nishiki Market, and the shopping streets are less than a block away. This hotel is in the heart of the action, while being tucked away in a quiet alley. You really can't get much better than this.
What I would change: Overall, I was very impressed with this hotel. We had a wonderful stay. It was very easy to get to all the sights from here. If I were to change anything, I would like to see the hotel introduce a turn-down service, where they actually make the futon beds for you. Although, this was not a huge issue, it was inconvenient to have to prepare our beds, after a long day touring the city. Another thing I would change would be to include breakfast. There are some restaurants nearby, and there was a bakery less than a block away, which we went to, and enjoyed greatly. However, it is much more convenient to be able to run down to the lobby to grab a bite before heading out for a day of touring.
