Gojo Guesthouse - Annex
Ranked #82 of 419 Specialty lodging in Kyoto
Reviewed March 23, 2010

This place had squeaky floor boards, narrow stairwells and door ways but it was an old building and I love that aspect of it. The staff were super friendly, it was cosy, clean enough and actually one of my favourite backpackers for its charm, great view from the twin room onto a local temple, value for money and best of all the location was awesome. Cobbled streets- windy streets all around it. There are temples in every direction and it's in Gion- the best area. I love Kyoto and will be back!

I'm not sure what the main Gojo guesthouse is like, but when I arrived at the Annex, I was sorely disappointed. The room I was offered was tiny, with only a western style single bed and nothing else. I know that rooms in Japan in often small, but for 3000 yen a night, I felt this was a bad deal. In fact, the whole place felt cramped and not overly welcoming. Despite this, the local guy on reception was friendly and helpful and not bothered that I wanted to go elsewhere.
I went instead to Hotel Sugicho, where I got a large Japanese style room for only 4,000 yen with attached bathroom, and was glad I went there instead.

Definitely not a first choice. Staff is not helpful at all (they don't understand English all that well), very surprising after seeing how Japanese people go out of their way to help you (in spite of language barriers). Building is cold (there was no heating when I stayed), the showers are horrible (extremely cold stone floor), cigarette smoke and noise from the coffee house climb up to the rooms. Reception hours are not kept properly. All in all, not a satisfactory stay.

We stayed only one night but we had a good nice sleep. Showers were clean. It was quiet.
It was very cold in the guesthouse but you can heat your room with a heater. However other areas are cold.
Location was great. Close to bus stops that you can take to the Kyoto station or do a quick sight seeing tour around town.
It's walking distance from the Gion District. Nice area for shopping, restaurants and night life.
We had breakfast at the Gojo Gueshouse (walking distance).. if you like toast and coffee.. it was ok.
We enjoyed our stay, thank you very much.

I stayed at the original Gojo guesthouse cafe and not the annex one. There were many great points about this place. one being the services and facilities they provided. The staff spoke good english and were very helpful. You could also hire bikes there for only 500yen a day. it was very worth it. it made the whole kyoto experience even better by being able to ride around. Japan is a relatively clean place so i wasn't suprised to see that the shared bathroom and toilets were clean.
Given the price per night, this place is highly recommended. I have stayed here twice now and don't mind going there a 3rd!

Lovely traditional japanese house in heart of Kyoto.
Great location, friendly and helpful staff. Good sized kitchen, laundry and bathrooms. Triple room was big enough for family of 4. Really enjoyed our stay here. Highly recommended.
Tip: make sure you have printed map for taxi driver.

Stayed at the Gojo Annex for a couple nights to save money for the ryokan splurge. In a city full of expensive lodging options, Gojo was a pleasant surprise. It is very basic, with a tiny shower and bathroom on the basement level and equally tiny rooms, but the AC worked well, the room was clean, the staff was friendly, they rented nice bikes (from the main gojo hostel...a great way to explore the city), and the location was fairly convenient (midway between yasaka and kiyomizu shrines).
