The hike was longer than expected but it was worth it. You have amazing views of the city and mountains. There were a lot of baby monkeys running around since we came in the spring. It was fun to see!

Takes about 20 minutes to hike up the hill, and on the top you see the monkeys, who will literally come right up to interact with you. You can feed them if you like, fun experience if in the area. Can get crowded.
The trail up the mountain starts w/ a very steep climb of stairs and then switchbacks to get to the top. You will be rewarded w/ views of Kyoto and cute Macaque monkeys. There are “park rangers/attendents” watching out for wayward monkeys & misbehaving humans as well. You can only feed purchased food from inside the hut. The monkeys are entertaining and a lot of fun to watch. Well worth the hike up to see them. The Park is located just across the bridge over the river.
charming and safe. A bit of a hike, so perhaps not for elderly or the very young (unless they are being carried). The monkeys are the size of a 2-3 yo child, so some of the children i saw at the summit were a bit frightened. Otherwise, delightful and safe. DOnT MISS
As others have commented this is a steep climb to get to but there are stopping places if you need them and some nice views to enjoy.
The monkeys roam freely and its good that the humans have to go in the cage to feed the animals rather than the other way round.
We spent an enjoyable time here watching the monkeys play, run around, sleep and feed.
Definitely worth a visit if you are up to the climb and in the area.
We went here after Arashiyama forest, I didn’t expect much since it was only $5 approx usd to get in. I enjoyed it very much. It was cool to have them all running around you, and there is an area you can go into where you can feed them chopped bananas and peanuts from behind a screen. It was a joyous feeling to have them grab the treats with their little hands. We went during spring so we also got to see plenty of baby monkeys. Be warned though , it is a bit of a hike up after the entrance fee
