“Unlike a zoo”
Reviewed April 7, 2014

There are warning signs as you go up the steep hill informing you of necessary precautions. The walk is going to take a while. It took about 20-30 minutes for me and my dad. When you get up you will see so many monkeys as well as a wonderful view. Definitely unlike that of a zoo. You will be inside the cage, feeding them or resting, while the monkeys will be above and holding on to the cage expecting food. I bought some fruits and peanuts to feed. It was enjoyable feeding the monkeys as they stuck their hand in the cage to grab the food out of my hand. The little monkeys had such little paws! At some point you may see the larger monkeys bully the smaller monkeys when you attempt to give the smaller monkeys food. I did see a couple anger a larger monkey. You will not be allowed to take the food outside. When you leave the cage some monkeys will be lounging around or following each other. Interacting with the monkeys was an interesting experience!

The walk up the mountain nearly killed (I'm pregnant) but it was worth the interaction with the monkeys. They say not to stare at the monkeys which is true. We saw a couple have a go at some people. We loved feeding them and watching them interact with each other.

“Worth the trip”

It's a long way up, but when you start seeing the monkies and giving them food, it's breathtaking!
And the view from up there is amazing!

“My favourite thing in whole of Kyoto”
Reviewed March 26, 2014

Not expecting this to be so awesome, but it was the best thing in Kyoto, whether you like Monkeys or not. Not too easy to find the place, as its not super popular, and is located in an isolated pocket. Its a 20 minute hike up the hill, after you pay for your entrance fees, so if you're not fit, you need to be aware of this. Nearing to the top, you start seeing the monkeys fight, play and scamper around. We saw the monkeys making clay mudballs. It was pretty surreal seeing them swinging around in front of your face, very different from your typical zoo. At the top, you can buy peanuts to feed them through the bars. Some are pretty rough, so you need to be careful. There's a general feeding time around noon, where the stuff throw peanuts all over the floor for the monkeys to chase after.

You can see the whole of Kyoto surrounded by hills and trees from the top, and the view is breathtaking.

Its a totally different experience from a zoo, to see these semi-wild monkeys. You need to experience it to know it. There's a reason why this is such a highly ranked attraction.

“As Cheap as Chimps”
Reviewed March 24, 2014

So, it's a bit of a hike to get to the monkey place from the middle of Kyoto. We had to get 2 trains and then walk a while, but it's worth it.

I was really hungover from an epic dumpling binge the night before at Senmonten (see other reviews) so really wasn't in the mood for the type of shenanigans that apes are known to bring to an occasion. Fortunately, a combination of a beautiful uphill walk (around 500m) and well behaved primates helped cure my hangover and give me an extremely memorable day.

Now, down to monkey business. The monkeys are really well behaved and pretty much ignore you as long as you're not being a total douche to them. There are also people I assume are employees of the park (humans not monkeys) who seem to coax the monkeys into nice photo areas.

The only downside is that the town at the base of the hill / park is massively touristy. It's so touristy I was getting annoyed with the tourists and I'm a tourist.

Overall though, an amazing day trip.
