“Dream come true”
Reviewed January 20, 2014

Any lover of traditional Japanese culture would not miss to visit Kyoto. We decided to stay at Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Sanjo. The quality of rooms is high standard and would not disappoint the customers. We grabbed the opportunity to try their public bath which offered a tranquil view of the landscape. The hotel boasts easy access to restaurants and transportation.

This hotel is in a very good location: central position, on one of the main roads in Kyoto and close to a metro station where you can take both the 2 main lines of Kyoto metro, so even Kyoto temples (which are not so close that you can reach just walking) can be reached in just few minutes with the metro. There are many restaurants, cafés and shops close to the hotel. The hotel itself is ok, not a luxury hotel but good. Rooms are quite comfortable and there's enough room, toilet and shower are ok, even if the view from the room window is not really cool. Anyway, good value for money.

Centrally located to many locations for sightseeing. It is a few minutes walk to Karasumaoike station which links to other stations conveniently. Clean and tidy rooms and bathrooms with bathtubs. Yukatas are also provided.

There are two common hot jacuzzi rooms for male and female guests. What i did was to shower in my hotel room, wear my yukata without any underwear, and go to the second floor where the jacuzzi is located. I used my white room card to tap into the female jacuzzi room. For male guests, they need to use the brown card. This is a good system as it guarantees that no one will walk into the wrong room. All guests are required to be in the nude in the jacuzzi and swimsuits are not allowed.

On level one, there is a tea restaurant which is always crowded. I do not think it is linked to the hotel as the patrons are mostly not hotel guests. I tried walking in twice to no avail. I believe thevtea must be really good and you should reserve a seat if you are an avid tea drinker.

We have booked our rooms from the booking.com

We took a twin and a triple beds.

We requested for an extra pillow from the from front desk for 5 of us.

The reply was most shocking when we were told that only 4 pillows extra pillows will be given because we are in the superior rooms. This is ridiculous and absurd.

This is surely NOT Japanese hospitality.

I will surely not booked this place again.

Having stayed in this hotel for 3 nights we found it to be a convenient hub for sightseeing in a majority of areas in and around Kyoto.

The hotel is located within 5 minutes walking distance to Karasumaioke subway station.

It takes 15 minutes by bus to Gion district and around 20-25 minutes to the Kyoto central railway station where you can take the Shinkansen and JR railway lines to other nearby major cities like Osaka and Kobe.

You can take a 10-12 minutes walk to the main shopping and food street of Shijo-dori.

There's a mini supermarket 2 blocks away from the hotel and a number of convenience stores such as Lawsons, Family Mart and 7-11 are easily within walking distance. There's also quite a number of cafes and restaurants in the neighbourhood.

The standard double room we checked in to is pretty small (as are most standard rooms in a majority of hotels in Japan). If you are not spending long hours holed up inside your hotel room then this should not be a major problem. That being said, we found our room clean and tidy upon checking in. The bathroom is also fairly small but hot water and shower pressure was adequate. The shower curtains were clean and did not smell musty.

Hotel check-in was quick and easy and check in staff were helpful if you needed directions to major sightseeing areas in and around Kyoto. Even though their spoken English vocabulary is quite limited they do try their best to help you out when you need their assistance. Another plus factor is you can borrow umbrellas from the front desk if there's inclement weather and use them for your day out.

Breakfast choices is a mix of Japanese and Western, with emphasis placed on Japanese styled dishes. Selection is ample and varied and is reasonably priced at ¥1300 per adult.

Wifi is readily available inside our hotel room and hotel lobby. Speed is fast and connection strong.

Although the hotel interior is showing it's age in this era where new and more modern concept hotels are progressively showing up, we find that Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Sanjo has managed to stay abreast of its' more modern competitors.

Overall we had a good and satisfactory stay in this hotel.

The hotel is located on a busy part of Kyoto, which consists pretty much in restaurants and shops, mostly boutiques. There are also big malls with great places to eat around and the subway station is around the corner, which is very convenient to move around the city. Hotel is nice, staff is courteous and helpful. The rooms are big for Japanese standards and are pretty quiet considering the noisy area. Overall, the hotel is a nice option for an affordable price.
