We stayed here on a dream tour of Japan, , i wanted one night of authentic luxury.
It was very expensive, but worth every penny.
As we arrived we were taken to our Hanare and shown all the tips and tricks.
The plunge bath was amazing, as was the decor.

Just down the road there is a small supermarket where we went to buy some cans of beer and wine and sat on the Balcony all night talking and looking at the stars.

If you want a night of traditional Japan, this Hanare is the place for you.

While looking for special places to stay in Kyoto, I was very surprised to learn that despite this ryokan's fame for being the current Emperor uncle's home in the 1930's, I could not find a single review for it. Still, I took the chance and email them five to six months ahead of the peak autumn season.

We had wanted to stay two nights, however, the only hanare with its private bath and WC in the ryokan, is only available for one night for our dates, 21 November. Since confirming my booking with Tomoko san, I had been looking forward to stay at this well known Japanese Royal residence.

After two nights of good stay at the Kikusui Ryokan (see my other review), we took a taxi to Yoshida Sanso and arrived at about 2pm. Since the official check in time is 4pm, Tomoko san had gracefully offered to store our luggages. Being located in the midst of a residential district, they had to call a taxi to bring us to nearby Pontocho Alley for some lunch.

Back with shopping bags and food for dinner, we were back at the Yoshida Sanso at 3.45pm. Tomoko san then showed us to the only hanare or detached house in the Sanso. First impressions were - Wow, its really huge and comes with a beautiful outdoor terrace! The sitting room is separated from its bedroom area by a sliding door, bringing the total of tatami mats used to 14.

And not to mention, there is an L-shaped balcony that envelopes the whole building, giving you another 18 tatami mats. In grand total, that is about 32 tatami mats, exlcuding the small walk in area, kitchenette area, WC and bathroom. Though not cheap at about 84,000 yen (after tax), I thought it was quite good value for your money. At this price, breakfasts is free for 2. With 2 meals (including dinner), the total would be 120,000 yen for 2.

We quickly took turns to soak in the hot cedar wood bath tub (water was already filled up to the bream for us!), relaxing in the tub and admiring the beautiful wooden bathroom. After that, we unpack a little and hop over to the main building. Saw Tomoko san, and she gladly showed us to a nice cute room (called Hana?) on the second floor of the main building, with an outdoor terrace with great views to the Higashiyama area (more specifically, the Westin Miyako Hotel)!

We then walked to a Temple next to the Sanso (sorry, don't have its English name). Climb a long flight of stairs and happen to realise that our hanare is actually situated along the same flight of stairs. Since the Temple closes early, our hanare with really very quiet for a good nights sleep.

The next morning, we have to be at the Kyoto train station by 8.15am for our ride to the Kansai airport. Tomoko san made sure that we could have our breakfast at the appointed time, 6.45am (she single handedly prepared the breakfast, probably getting up at 6am?), and we were really touched by that special warm service. More so, when we confirmed later with her that she is indeed the daughter of the Proprietress of the Yoshida Sanso!

A pre-booked taxi then arrived at 7.15am for our short ride to the closest JR station. Having seen how choatic and slow traffic can be in Kyoto in the previous days (peak autumn season) , we decided not to trust the road system, but instead opted for the subway sytsem. True enough, we were well ahead of our scheduled time and even took an earlier train to the Airport. Wise move!

All in all, I will never forget the warm and priviledged stay at the famed Yoshida Sanso in Kyoto. Albeit our stay is a little too short, it is nevertheless, a very memorable one. Didn't give this ryokan a full 5 stars because of its residential location (didn't see any eateries nearby and guess it is not so easy to hail for taxis unless you call for one ...) and older electrical appliances (TV, toaster and fridge).

Oh yes, not forgetting to mention the well tended beautiful gardens of Yoshida Sanso - it comes with plenty of red maple trees in autumn.... sublime and magical!
