“Good value hotel in good location”
Reviewed October 27, 2013

Well appointed, good value hotel within chic area of town. To get to the more touristy old part of the city you can take the metro, which is really easy to figure out.

Hotel was nicely furnished and has a lovely tea room near the entrance. Also rather bizarrely it has a chapel, a replica of a chapel in Knightsbridge, London apparently.

Wonderful hotel with fantastic service, good location, a lot of Western amenities. We greatly appreciated the concierge making dinner reservations for us and providing us with a map, directions and the reservation details. I highly recommend! Thanks for a great stay. If we come to Kyoto again, we'll absolutely stay here.

We love this hotel because of its great location. Though room is old but it's super clean. Only one thing to blame is a gentleman at check-in counter, he's one and only rough Japanese ever met during the whole trip. Apart from that nothing to blame. We definitely stay at this hotel again for our future Kyoto visit.

If you are able to book this hotel in advance to take advantage of good rates, I highly recommend Hotel Monterey Kyoto. My husband and I liked the location - within a 3-minute walk to a subway station and 10-20 minute walks to many eating, shopping and even sight-seeing spots in Kyoto. We also liked that it's not such a touristy spot so it's not too busy and crowded, and you have closer access to cheaper and better food (warning: eating at less touristy places means less chances of English being spoken and understood and less chances of credit card acceptance).

The bathroom is a bit small, which might be a challenge for taller/big-bodied guests. The ceiling can be too low if you're over 6 feet tall, and the bathroom sink is also low.

We found this hotel to be pretty average. The room was small but clean. The bed was small (a double maybe) and the pillows uncomfortable. The location was close to a subway which was nice, but the location a bit out of the city centre. I found the layout of the ground floor of the hotel to be a tad confusing when entering. The room walls were thin and could hear the people talking, walking and doing other stuff (!) throughout the evenings. I found the bathroom small and didn’t like that the door opened outwards into the already small room. We were on a high floor and had a nice view outside our window and enjoyed seeing the beautiful sunset in the evening. The free Wi-fi was quick and reliable. The staff spoke a reasonable amount of English. We were able to store our bags for the day after checking out. A staff member even accompanied us out front to a taxi and gave the driver instruction for which I was very grateful for. The price was very cheap which made the hotel acceptable. I would honestly try another hotel if I were to return to Kyoto.

I've noticed that the rooms here are on the larger side as compared to many other Japanese establishments - if you can, you can pay abit more for the twin bedrooms which is highly recommended. Beds are comfortable, the cleaners do a good job and not to mention the daily replenishing of Uji sencha tea sachets for you tea lovers.

The lobby setting is almost like a goth's castle but heavily toned down, with it's replica church for weddings and wooden pews matched with stained glass near the lobby.

The hotel is only a quick few steps from the Karasuma Oike subway station exit 6 and the handy Starbucks is only a few steps away. The Sanjo street with it's many quaint shops and eateries - not to mention the newly opened Boulangerie Paul from France is nearby.

As I'm typing this from bed in this hotel - I can only wish my stay was longer.

Room Tip: Upgrade yourself to the twin bedroom. Room sizes are larger and you won't have to trip over your...

Stayed here for 3 nights in September, after travelling from Tokyo, it was a pleasure to arrival at this hotel and be welcomed by the super friendly staff. The hotel itself is beautiful and has many facilities, the lobby and resteraunt looked excellent.
The room itself was smaller than I'd preffered, but large enough for two suitcases. Friends were In the twin room which has much more space if you need it.
The bathroom was a great size and the bathtub was massive which was a plus.
There is a LAN cable and wifi in the room, which I've noticed isn't too common for Japan so it definitely came in handy not having to sit in the lobby to check the web.
The location is also perfect, a short walk to Nijo castle and imperial palace, and only a minute or so to the subway.
The only downside I had was the room I was in got super dusty every morning. Usually I won't mind but being hypo allergenic it was annoying to wake up feeling groggy due to dust everywhere.
Overall, had a very comfortable stay with the best hotel staff I had come across in Japan. Would definitely return!
