“Central location for 4 days in Kyoto”
Reviewed April 9, 2013

In the middle of the cherry blossom blooming, we were lucky to get accommodation in Kyoto at the last minute, and this was the place. It was very conveniently located, an easy walk to Karasumaoike Station, Nishiki, Pontocho, the Imperial Palace, Kyoto Museum and more.

I don't speak Japanese, and though the staff tried to be helpful, the language barrier hampered answers to less basic questions. The colour scheme in the bathroom is a bit intense, as other reviews have noted, but would happily stay here again, just for the convenience.

At USD 200 per night, the Monterey is not cheap, but given that we were struggling to find a room in Kyoto at the time, turned out to be well worth it. We found the Monterey via the usual hotel sites but could not secure a booking so went to their own site and booked directly - probably cost us more but at least we got a room.

The rooms are lovely - uniquely, but very tastefully decorated. We had a standard-double and yes, they're a little small but not at all bad for Japan. They're big enough to have a comfy chair and side table, as well as a reasonably sized double bed.

The location is excellent - close to the subway exit, three stops from Kyoto station, a short bus ride to Gion, and within walking distance of Nishiki market, Teramachi Street and Kyoto's main shopping street.

Front desk and concierge staff are very good. We asked for restaurant recommendations three times and each one was excellent - close by, great food, reasonably priced (nothing worse than being sent to a top-end restaurant way out of your budget), and exactly what we asked for. They told us where to hire bicycles and lent us umbrellas when it was raining. Housekeeping provided extra pillows immediately upon request.

I'd say the onsen is good, but given that its the only one I've ever been to that isn't much of a benchmark. The outdoor pool in particular provides a hot bath to soak in and cooler air to breathe for those of us who find saunas etc a little suffocating.

We didn't eat in the hotel so can't comment on the restaurants (although they appeared expensive) and didn't use the chapel (which I can't decide is quite nice or kitsch in the extreme).

So, not cheap but definitely worth the money. Would definitely stay there again.

Small room. Ugliest color scheme ever seen in a bathroom. Very basic, but it did the job. All female crew at the lobby is very efficient and give good tips on dining etc. Very tough on late check out... Pay for extra night if you check out after 12 noon! The good thing is that there is a lot of incentive to leave the room and enjoy Kyoto city! However, I wouldn't recommend it to my friends visiting the city.

The onsen on the top floor offers panoramic views of Kyoto. Book this hotel for the onsen experience alone. Located close to subway. Small rooms the only drawback. Excellent hotel for western taste. Try to get a room close to stairs if you want a very quiet room.

Kyoto Monterey Hotel is a fantastic place to stay in Kyoto. The location is great as it is just on the edge of the really busy part, its near the Imperial Park and in general there are just lots of lovely shops and restaurants near by.
The room was quite big (for Japan standards) and the staff were really friendly (as there all are really in Japan).

Very comfortable and clean accommodation, with easy access to the city. I would have preferred a safe in the room instead of the concierge, but this is only a minor inconvenience. Breakfast buffet is pricey - so we skipped it and had breakfast across the street at Starbucks instead.

Very reasonable. Only a short walk from the subway. Great location near the Nishiki market and Gion meant a lot of Kyoto could be explored by foot. Clean, well managed, great desk staff. We struggled getting the ac to set right, it was confusing. Quiet, we had a room facing the back, no street noise at all. Did not eat there, lots of places around.
