This hotel was spotless, quiet and comfy and in a great location. Minutes from the main shopping street in Kyoto with lots of places to eat right on the doorstep.

The underground station is a 3 minute walk up the road and you can get to the main train station in about 10 minutes after catching a train. Travelling on the train line in the opposite direction you can be in Gion in about 15 minutes - perfect.

The staff were discreet and friendly - we couldn't have wanted anything else from a hotel.

Hotel Monterey was all we expected, after reading TA reviews. Small rooms but quirky wallpaper and purple bathroom floors and quality everything, including staff attitudes and attention, made for a wonderful stay in this peaceful city. There we six weddings in the indoor ground floor chapel (looks like it is straight out of English countryside) during our 5 day stay, which added to the charm of the place. Walking distance to the market street and Gion district... where we went Geisha spotting. Only two subway stops from main Kyoto station (5mins) and 20 mins by bus to Arishamiya. For us it was the perfect hotel and the perfect position to see all in Kyoto, Arishamiya and easy to catch the train from Nijo station to surrounding areas and Kinosaki-Onsen. The friendliest and most efficient staff we encountered in all of Japan.

From the moment I walked in the front door I knew I was going to enjoy staying at this hotel! The decor was very inviting with paintings, nice lights, mix of dark and light panelling/walls, and a tastefully decorated large Christmas tree in the foyer. Later when I checked in (first visit was to drop off my luggage) things got even better design-wise - a funky room in maroon, pink and cream shades, with a striped feature wall and bathroom wall. So much better than the conservative approach to decorating favoured by many hotels! I had an interesting cityscape view with the mountains in the background, close by a pagoda with pond and white swans, and across the street about 7 levels up unidentifiable people getting fit every evening at a gym. The hotel sells souvenirs/mementos which are displayed in the lobby and foyer, and the prices are no different to what those in the shops (ie no rip-off mark-ups). I bought a beautiful book of autumn scenes in Kyoto for only about $15AUD. They have 2 or 3 places to eat within the hotel - I had afternoon tea in The Library which is a pleasant spacious eatery with glass windows facing the street and displays of nice china (tea services etc). The food was good. I think they serve cocktails in the evenings. The hotel is located in a nice wide avenue with lots of deciduous trees. The subway is virtually next door and there is a taxi rank out the front. It is also within walking distance of the Imperial Palace/Gardens, the Manga Museum and Nijo-jo. The free LAN internet access was fast and worked well (wireless is also available). The only slight criticism I would have was that the lighting in the room was not as strong as I would have liked, a brighter desk lamp would be a good addition. Would definitely stay again.

Would we stay there again? Yes, no question! The hotel is very close to the subway and once one masters the bus and subway routes, it is very easy to access all parts of Kyoto from the Monterey. The staff seem cool but they are simply being super polite and very conservative. In less than perfect English, they will do their level best to offer advice, touring assistance, room service requests etc. We didn't eat at the hotel (bit too untidy in our travel pants etc for the posh restaurant) but there is no shortage of food outlets in the area. We found the room we had booked was simply too small for two average-build Aussies and paid a fair price to upgrade to a 40sq foot room which was more comfortable and more the size we would expect at home.

I chose this hotel because it was relatively inexpensive (for an American in Japan) and looked to be in a good, central location. That definitely turned out to be the case. We were near a Subway line and in walking distance to many restaurants and shops. So, the location was great. The room was very small (the smallest we experienced in Japan) for 2 people-there was nowhere to put our suitcases-so we were kind of tripping over them the whole week. The desk staff and concierge were a little cold, especially compared to the staff at our hotel in Tokyo. But I would recommend the hotel based on its convenient location and the fact that it was clean and quiet. The city of Kyoto is beautiful and wonderful. If you are planning a trip, please spend a good amount of time here!

Room Tip: You can ask for an "American" pillow if the buckwheat ones are too firm for you.

This hotel was decent. The room was clean and decently sized. The best thing about the hotel is that it is centrally located and a decent price. I would note, however, that not all the front desk staff speak English very well which isn’t an issue unless you rely on the concierge to make dinner reservations for you or help you navigate the city.

From the moment you walk in, you feel like maybe you overspent. Has the look and feel of a very exclusive, high end hotel. Not cheap mind you; but considering the location and property, well worth the price. Kyoto is a big city...you will need to take subway or taxi to see all that you will wish to see, but this hotel seems to be very centrally located. We were able to check in a bit early, which I hear is not normal for most hotels in Japan to do. The Conceirge was fantastic, able to help me coordinate different site seeing activities on my own which was certainly appreciated. Room was good sized with comfortable beds. In room WIFI was nice. A very nice treat after a long day of sightseeing!
