I stayed here in July, a very hot time in Japan. Getting to the hotel from the Kyoto station was easy- a short 800 yen cab ride one direction and 3 stops on the subway the other. From the subway, the hotel is a short walk, turning right as you come up the stairs exit number 6. The receptionist and concierge spoke excellent English and made getting oriented in the hotel and local area very easy (their custom map of local bus stops to head off to different sites made heading off so easy). The room was a decent size, a bit dark in decor, but with a fridge provided. Wireless Internet was easy to access and the signal was strong. A paper was provided every morning and the breakfast in the hotel had a wide selection of choices. Coffee was a bit weak bu there are 2 Starbucks close by with pleasant places to sit. The Nishiki market and Nijo castle are in walking distance as is the river area. The hotel was quiet and cool despite the heat, and overall a very nice place to stay at a good price.

What a breath of fresh air! Having stayed at many bland, cookie-cutter business hotels in Japanese cities, this place was so refreshing. From walking in the door, the decor is so different and interesting. modern, contemporary take on old british 'boys clubs' buildings (or at least my imagined images of them!).

Reception service was great. It appears that the staff have a very good level of english (I am comfortable using japanese).. The man that checked me in was a bit fumbly/ unorganised, but he was friendly enough.
The elevators seemed to have the heating on (or maybe no air con, it had been a steamy/ hot day)! I kind of felt like I was riding in a haunted house or the 'tower of terror' at Disneyland (although, in a good way).
On each floor were glass sliding doors needing key cards to enter the rooms hallway. Nice for safety. The 11th floor was also ladies only! I noticed the public area carpets around the elevators was very dirty/ stained, in need of a good conditioning. Otherwise, all areas were well maintained and clean, it is hard to tell the age of the hotel (though that is also probably in party due to the decor being pretty good for hiding general wear and tear!). Hallways had lovely artwork on the walls, on the guest room floors was chinese-inpsired art pieces. On the Events floors/ reception area, very classic european 18-19th century artworks.

Room: standard japanese business hotel size. I was in a blue-based stripy room. Quite masculine, cosy. The bathroom fan and air con made a racket when first turned on, but fine within a minute. Althogh, the air con worked in a weird way, it didn't satisfactorally cool and keep cool my room. Also despite being mid-summer, there was a thick futon/ duvet on the bed, and no option to just cover with a single sheet.

Overall, perfectly sufficient room, reasonable price (with advance booking). Close to the subway, awesome 'reserve' Starbucks on the next corner. There seemed to be interesting buildings, restaurants, art museums/ galleries in the area.

I was attending a wedding at the hotel. The wedding chapel, a replica of a europen church, was sweet. The reception in the Kensington room was well served. Great decor again, the staff were great, the womens 'maids' uniform was sweet!

I absoultely recommend this hotel for its character, and it seems to have great service.

A very nice hotel with very helpful and English speaking staff. Excellent rooms, small but nice. Comfortable beds and good shower/tub. We were in town during the Gion festival and then this hotel has the perfect location. The only thing that they could add is some nescafe, besides the green tea and black tea. But it is really a minor detail. We got a good deal since we stayed during the week as well as weekend, otherwise I think it can be quite expensive. If we return to Kyoto we would like to stay here again, that is how good it was.

I booked this hotel because I found a very good deal on-line and it seemed like a decent place (overall good reviews). The hotel met my expectations and was a good place to stay for the week while I had business and took time off to see the sights. As expected, the room was small, but nicely maintained. My main complaint was that there was only a small armoire to store clothes (really intended for hangers), and no dresser. I ended up leaving some clothes in my suitcase and put others in the nightstand. That being said, the location was vey good for exporing the city and sights - the subway station is about 1.5 blocks away and I ended up taking that to many placed in the city, and would then walk to get to attractions. The hotel staff, in particular the concierge, were fantastic in providing information about getting about and also helped me book my stay at another hotel in a different Japanese city on my way home. If you can get a good price on a room here, I would definitely recommend the Hotel Monterey.

Room Tip: Room facing interior of block (rather than street) was very quiet.

Very nice design! a little far from Kyoto station but right next to the hotel there is a metro station. The room was extremely clean and well decorated. Internet was provided. The staff was very kind and helpful to answer any question. I didn't have breakfast there but there is a starbucks close. Also the area where Monterey is located is very clean and peaceful, with many stores around. Absolutely recommended!! thumbs up!
