“Friendly traditional inn”
Reviewed November 25, 2012

We stayed here for 4 nights at the start of November 2012. The autumn colour had not quite changed, but were just starting.
The room was quite large and traditional Japanese style with tatami mats and futons to sleep on.
The staff were very friendly and helpful and spoke English reasonably well.
We were lucky to be there on an evening (weekly?) where some local volunteers came by to teach calligraphy, origami and to dress in traditional Japanese style outfits, this was alot of fun and very interesting. Definitely recommended if you can make it.
There was a bath downstairs next to reception that you could reserve, this was big enough for 2 and a nice way to relax at the end of the day.
It was 10-15mins walk from Kyoto central station. The location was ok, walkable into the busier areas of the city (20mins), with some temples nearby, and the major sites all accessible via bus from the central station.
There was a curfew at midnight, after which time the front door was locked.

We stayed at the ryokan Shimizu for 7 days. The personnel were always very friendly and helpful; for example they found us walking tours and maps for particular parts of the city, and always asked how our day had gone. We always received a friendly welcome when we came back to the ryokan. The breakfast was a special treat; we tried breakfast at other places but decided that breakfast at the ryokan was the best. The ryokan was close to the train station, which was really good both when catching buses or using the train to visit temples in Kyoto and around.

i totally felt at home with the fantastic service offered by the staff and helpers. especially liked how there were cultural activities in the evenings to introduce us to kyoto. they made sure we got a taste of japan for sure! the night's sleep was the best i've had throughout the trip as the futons were really comfortable. good value for money; the price is one of the best you can find for this size, quality and location, which is about 5 minutes walk from kyoto station. will definitely go back when i visit kyoto again.

We had a very nice 4 night stay here, and experienced one of the Ryokan's cultural evenings (Tues and Sat at time of writing) at which local students volunteer to teach calligraphy, origami, and Japanese, as an opportunity to practise their English. This really was a lot of fun, and the students were so friendly, so I'd definitely recommend it.

The Ryokan is clean and well presented, and a 10 min walk from the train station (we had no trouble wheeling our cases along the road). Downtown is a bit of a trek, and if you're getting a taxi back be sure to get the directions printout from reception for the taxi driver.

We hired two of the bicycles for the day, cycling in Kyoto is so easy (mostly on pavements, and crossings accommodate cyclists too) and a lot more pleasant that the subways.

We really enjoyed our stay - only suggestions would be to start accepting credit card payment (currently cash only) and also to maintain the bikes a little better, many had low tyre pressure and both out ours had extremely squeaky brakes which attracted attention for most of the day!

Room Tip: There was a fridge in the room which was useful, but noisy at night so we unplugged it.

This Ryokan is so cozy and warm. THe staffs are so friendly and helpful at all times. They do organize activities for us to know more about the cultures and people in Japan, which is quite good.
Whenever we are back from outside, we always find it very warm and cozy in the room with everything ready.
It is super clean.
So far so good with Ryokan Shimizu.

I thought that the best thing by far about Ryokan Shimizu was the very friendly and helpful staff. The rooms were very clean and tidy and the beds were comfortable enough. It was such a relaxing atmosphere that I didn't even notice that there was a TV in the room until the last night I was there. The location was only a 5 min walk from the station and hand for sightseeing. Overall it was a very peaceful stay.

The only negative thing for me was the slippers that are to be worn from the entry to your room. I have larger than normal feet and had to make do with a slightly smaller size slipper. This was normally OK except it made navigating the narrow stairs a bit dangerous. It's only a minor thing that probably would not affect most.

Great place to stay, wall between rooms were a little thin but the the rooms were very comfortable. Handy location not to far from the train station do good for side trips to Nara and Arashiyama. They ryokan also had bikes avail me for hire... Which we made use of to see the local sites in Gion. Staff are very welcoming and helpful.
