“Fantastic hotel, great staff”
Reviewed January 2, 2011

It is hard to believe that this hotel is a Hyatt – it doesn’t feel at all like a chain hotel. This Hyatt has all the style of a boutique hotel with the amenities of a five star chain.

Although it is a little out of the way I would certainly recommend this hotel for anyone visiting Kyoto. The rooms are fantastically well appointed and stylishly designed and the beds are incredibly comfortable. However, I think the highlight of the room is the bathroom – with a fabulous shower and a nice deep Japanese bath.

The Hyatt Regency is the perfect place to stay after a long day of sightseeing. The bar downstairs is excellent, although a little pricey (as with most bars in Japan).

I think the best thing about this hotel are the staff – everyone was incredibly friendly, super efficient and helpful. This was particularly true of the concierge staff, who helped out with restaurant bookings and recommendations as well as locating destinations on the map.

I would definitely stay here again, and would recommend it to anyone visiting Kyoto.

Stayed here for 4 nights when traveling in Japan and really liked the hotel and its facilities. Got a really nice room with a few Japanese touches and a great bathroom with a bath and a big shower.

Also got a really good deal in combination with a stay at the Hyatt in Tokyo (still available in 2011, Explore Classic Japan deal) so I ended up paying way less than most places.

I liked the fitness center, too bad that they don't have a Concept2 rower...

What is a little annoying is that the internet in the rooms is expensive. But there is free internet access in the lobby so it's not too bad.

Breakfast was included in my rate and it was really good as well.

Location is a little inconvenient but not to bad. A 20min walk to the station from which you can take the trains or the subway. The bus stops right next to the hotel and there are lots of taxis waiting so you can get around easily.

And Kyoto is great....

Hello All

We chose the Hyatt on a last minute trip to Kyoto mainly because it was much cheaper than most medium to high class Ryokans.

The hotel is nice, good and free wifi in the room. We were upgraded to a mini suite facing the back which was nice as the view was quite relaxing. I do believe how ever that the rooms close to the main lobby might be crowded. Also noticed they would be significantly smaller. Ours was great though.
Breakfast was nice, nothing amazing but good for Japan. Rather pricey.
My main concern is that it’s not very central and there is no subway in Kyoto, those busses are not great, but you can just get around in Cabs.
Not very close to the central station.

Staff was friendly and helpful and the hotel was very clean and well maintained.

All in All a good hotel

We decided to base ourselves in Kyoto while sightseeing in Osaka and Kyoto for a romantic couple getaway. We stayed here for 4 nights and the experience was pure excellence! The service staff are biligual and offer detailed and great information on our queries on sightseeing and travelling. We missed the hotel soooo much when we were in Tokyo. Our room was very accessible, near to the lift lobby. The entire room design was well thought-through, spacious and beautiful. The bathroom is clean and offer separate shower, bathtub and washbasin area. We had a great view of the National Museum of Kyoto right opposite the hotel. When hungry, there's a 24hr McDonald's and two convenient stores offering food, snacks, hot drinks, magazines, toiletries just a couple of minutes away. There's also a Coco curry rice outlet that closes at midnight a short walk away. The breakfast at The Grill was great and we had a great Japanese Garden view while dining. We did not enjoy the Japanese Breakfast set at Touzan (this is the alternative to the buffet western breakfast at The Grill).

The setback is that it is a distant away from the Kyoto JR Station and the central Shijo-Gion District, so we had to walk quiet abit to get to the station. Alternatively you can cab to the station for about 650-700 Yen where you can access to other parts of Kyoto via bus, subway or JR train. There's no Wifi or Internet in the room but they provide free wifi at the hotel lobby, but that's good enough for us.

Westayed 4 nights at the Hyatt Kyoto during our trip to Japan. The hotel comes at a premium, so our expectations were high. Unfortunately, in some aspects we were dissapointed.

The room in itself is good, but ours did face a wall, so no views at all. The room and especially the bathroom is of a decent size. No WIFI in the room, you needed to go to the lobby, where it could become shivering cold due to the huge sliding doors. The lobby and the hotel in general have a minimalistic design, to the extent it has a rather cold feel to it. Hotel staff is kind, but nonetheless failed to inform us about the free taxi shuttle to Kyoto station. The location is not that bad, but be nonetheless prepared for a lot of walking and avoid Kyote busses, since they are chronically overcrowded, especially in the evening.

We did not try breakfast or any of the restaurants, since there is ample choice around the hotel, especially when walking up tp the railway station. Good points for the hotel bar, which has an intimate design. As others complained, service charge and VAT is added to the already steep prices, one may wonder why they just don't include them in the prices.

In summary, while we had a comfortable stay, for the price we paid, we expected more and the hotel is lacking some details like WIFI in the rooms and a wider choice of foreign channels on the TV.

We spent 2 nites there with 2 other in Arishiyama. This is the only Western hotel we have stayed in Kyoto. It is close to the train station but quite far from Gion. The staffs as you would expect are bilingual and very polite. However the first room we have faced a solid brick wall and far far away. This is not what USD 500 per nite should be. Even after changing room, it is like a Motel 6. The Italian restaurant is quite good but not the Japanese. The staffs at the gift shop were cold. But the "foreigner" at the concierge was excellent (his restaurant recommendations are right on)

During my 15 days at Japan I stayed at the Hyatt in Tokyo and Hakone. When I arrived at the Hyatt Kyoto I was expecting the same hotel experience I had enjoyed so far. It was definitely a let down - for about the same price

Nothing significant affected my stay but the shortcomings of this hotel put it in a category below the other Hyatts visited. Let me start:

* There is no in-room Wireless Internet and Wired Internet is paid. In a hotel of this category this is the Kiss of Death. There are much cheaper hotels in kyoto that give you free in-room Wireless Internet.

* Sleep quality is not that good because you can hear others flushing their toilets. I confirmed this with other guests.

* The Japanese hotel restaurant is nothing to write home about and pricey.

* Rooms are quite small when compared to the other Hyatts.

On the up side:

* Staff was excellent, specially the concierge which would go out of their way to find good restaurants, locations, etc

* Location did not bother me as some others pointed out. Although it is a 5 minute walk to the train station (not subway - be clear on this) , the Keihan train line allows you to visit Gion, Fushimi-Inari, Nara, Kiyomizu-Gojō and other top attractions.

* The big Japanese style shower (if there is such definition) was very nice.

* The Hotel is pretty and the large Japanese gardens in the entrance and back provide a nice touch.

* Free Taxi service from Kyoto station was highly appreciated.

If I go back to Kyoto I will be looking at another place to stay unless they drop the price to match the offering.
