“Gorgeous Hotel”
Reviewed January 19, 2014

We stayed here for 3 nights with our 3 kids (7,5 and 3yo). The rooms were beautiful, breakfast buffet delicious and overall service was phenomenal. I would highly recommend this hotel, especially for foreigners needing extra assistance from their amazing concierge service.

We stayed here for one night, followed by a previous night at a hotel that was closer to the shopping district of Kyoto. The hotel was beautiful, customer service by the receptionist, door man, and concierge was all top-notch. There was free coffee you could help yourself to in the morning when walking outside of the hotel.

It is true that the hotel is not close to JR Kyoto Station but it is very close to a Keihan railway station, so you could take that one and transfer onto Kyoto metro. Kyoto has a well-developed bus system, so unlike Tokyo, where you'll take the metro and the JR everywhere, Kyoto seems to depend more on the bus system for its public transportation. Having said that, there is a bus that stops right in front of the hotel that goes to JR Kyoto station.

Although getting there when you get into Kyoto might be slightly difficult, its location is great to see some of the most visited temples in Higashiyama area of Kyoto. You can walk to Kyomizudera and many of the other temples around, and make a day of temple hopping.

We tried the hotel's Japanese restaurant for dinner as well as the Italian one for lunch, and they were both good. The hotel bar has Happy Hour hours until 7 and has half-off drinks. :]

Reading the reviews on Tripadvisor I assumed that this hotel was located on a walking distance from the train station...well, not at all. It takes a 15 minute taxi ride to get to the property. Yes, the lobby is beautiful, the service is perfect (like every where else in Japan), the rooms are comfortable (but small) and the breakfast is way overpriced for what is offers. And everything in Kyoto happens around the train station: tours departures, access to different parts of the city... and staying at the Hyatt you must take a cab and go to the station and to come back. So why not stay at a hotel in the station like the Granvia? I stayed in several hotels in Japan during our visit, and all I can say is that the Hyatt was a disappointment.

Room Tip: The Granvia at the train station is the best hotel for travelers in Kyoto. Beautiful and on a perfec...

So much about the Hyatt Regency Kyoto is of a high calibre - wonderful, attentive staff, serene, relaxing and understated public spaces with a great bar and restaurants. Unfortunately the five star experience falls a little short inside the hotel bedrooms. Hard surfaces and poor sound insulation leads to surprising and sometimes embarrassing noise transmission between adjacent rooms at some locations in this hotel. It really is disconcerting to be privy to other peoples actions behind closed doors and perhaps this is something that needs to be reviewed by the management team. An evening turndown service would also bring this hotel into the league of other hotels in this price bracket.

We, a family of 5, spent a week here over New Year and were hugely impressed. The management is exemplary. The GM, Ken Yokoyama is omnipresent, knows exactly what is going on, leads from the top and the results speak for themselves.. He is probably the best GM we have ever encountered. Our every wish was looked after and any slight problem was immediately dealt with efficiently and effectively. He even got up at 6am to say goodbye to us on our last day and presented us with packed breakfasts and hot coffee! The concierge Bando was tremendous, understanding exactly what we needed, making helpful suggestions and just generally organising everything for us. Our rooms, on the third floor, were quiet and attractive with enough space (though smallish cupboards/drawers) and a neat bathroom with large shower and deep tub. People have commented on the distance from the centre of town but this is minimal and taxis were readily available, the bus stop is right outside the hotel and the subway about 7 mins walk away. There is nothing more central at such a quality/price level and it was a real delight to stay in. Food was good (breakfast excellent) and there are many local restaurants if the fancy takes you. Would happily recommend and indeed stay there again if we return to Kyoto.

Room Tip: Third floor was good for us.

Great location, walking distance to temples and shopping. The room was amazing--we had a shower that was a walk-in room, complete with zen stones. The room overall was very relaxing and of course, very clean. Housekeeping service was great. Restaurants and bars were very good but not outstanding. Although the bar/lounge downstairs from the lobby had nice ambience. The staff were extremely helpful; we will return!

This may very we'll be the best of the Regency brand. It was very similar in comfort, service and design to a Park Hyatt brand. My room was very comfortable with an ingeniously-designed bathroom. Attention and helpfulness of the staff was outstanding. Only minor drawback was the fitness center was remotely located. Otherwise, simply perfect!
