“The most amazing hotel”
Reviewed September 12, 2013

The Hyatt Kyoto is a stunning hotel with an amazing Japanese garden as a centre piece. The staff are all very helpful and the service extremely efficient. The rooms are decorated in modern Japanese style with lovely bathrooms. The bar has a very serene atmosphere with great cocktails and canapés served by the executive chef Shaun, a very charming Australian. The Japanese restaurant looks over the stunning garden and serves authentic food with timely service. This is the only hotel I would stay in when in Kyoto.

Room Tip: Try to get a room overlooking the garden.

The hotel concierge has helped us a lot on planning the trip. They have given us the bus route on how to go to different templates in one day, recommending some good local restaurants around those areas, booking the wagashi workshop etc.

Besides, the design of the hotel and room sounds nice to me as it seemed to have a good blend of modern design and Japanese culture. I am not a design expert but I do appreciate that.

very luxuries, while not straying far from the japanese style/architecture. rooms are great and the combo showers/bathtubs/separate toilets are great. very spacious, and courteous staff. right next to Sanjusangendo Hall, a great place to check out, as well as Kyoto museum

only knock would be that they don't serve enough traditional japanese food, and it is not near a subway/JR.

Though some prefer the shopping fervour of the downtown, we prefer the natural settings of Kyoto and the opportunity to walk leisurely through to its string of temples and historic hills. The Hyatt Regency is a perfect hotel for this. Added to which its soft design, and natural setting made a positive impression as we arrived. My wife, as an interior designer, marveled at its features including lattice works ceilings, and wonderfully varied and imaginative dividers/screens in the downstairs restaurant bar.
But the best feature of the hotel was the service, from the General Manager, Ken Yokoyama, who came to know of our personal celebration, and the concierges Keiko Tahashi and Sakura Bando (together with Erina Nakayama, at reception) who provided yeoman services in arranging train reservations and tourist info guidance. We ate in most of the restaurants and even arranged for my favorite martini ( a " saki-vodka martini"). All excellent.

Great location, friendly staff, room was very clean. Bathroom was a little strange, the curtains didn’t completely cover the windows so when you shower you feel kind of exposed. Breakfast buffet Western style and just okay. I would have preferred a Japanese style breakfast but it either wasn’t an option or no one offered it to us. The buffet food was just average, which was a disappointment. Getting coffee was also a challenge. They would ask if we wanted coffee when we sat down and then go away and never serve it until we asked again.

Lovely room, great service (especially the concierge). Yummy breakfast, great way to start the day. Very easy to get around and lots of interesting temples nearby.

I would definitely stay again if visiting Kyoto.

The Hyatt has wonderful rooms, helpful desk staff, and a yummy (although expensive) breakfast. The 4500Y breakfast is half price for kids under 12! if you don't have Hyatt points to add on spa and breakfast, maybe this will work for you https://www.tablethotels.com/plus
In our opinion, this breakfast was even nicer than the breakfast at the Tokyo Park Hyatt.

1) There are several easily reached temples/shrines literally around the corner from the hotel. Bonus.
2) There is a lovely Asian restaurant in the basement of the hotel; try the Kyoto vegetables as they are specialties of the Kyoto area. Request a table by the garden window when you RESERVE your table. If you don't reserve, they will seat you "anywhere" in the restaurant.

3) Brides come to this hotel; if you are lucky you will see a beautifully dressed bride in kimono in the lower level of the hotel

4) the Kyoto National Museum is under renovation; it has one special exhibition ongoing currently; it was a fun exhibit on the role of leisure activities in society. Beautiful artifacts were on display; the concierge actually had free tickets to give us.

5) There is an EXTREMELY famous piece of French sculpture standing guard in front of the museum--- when you happen upon it you go... what... is that really here????? Yes, it is. Enjoy it and pose right alongside it. ;-)
6) We enjoyed the museum gift shop at the end of the exhibit--- but also the separate shop near the street. Very nice gifts for folks back home.

Cons:
1) you are not within walking distance, really, of the train station (esp if you have a heavy bag and /or there is a heat wave going on)
2) you are not really within the "cute shopping" district; there's no real browsing to do here after nightfall
3) you are not in the "geisha" district
4) You are not near the Imperial Palace; you also need special tickets for this (just like you would if you want to see the White House in Washington, DC) Check this information out BEFORE you go abroad, or you will spend time on your vacation figuring this stuff out.

So--- if you do research on Kyoto and find all your "must-see" attractions are actually closer to the Imperial Palace--- you might want to book something closer to that area.

And, as one last aside, the Kyoto Hyatt Guest Services manual offers guests the option of in room massage until 4am; but, must be booked by 3am at the latest (...)
