I was lucky enough to spend five nights in this fantastic hotel in July. THe experience begins as you leave your car. The entrance to the hotel is behind a discreet and elegant low wall which blends in to the local environs. The entrance then leads on to a serene flowing waterway which echoes the river running alongside the hotel. Once inside the building the design and attention to detail continue to amaze, the style is both contemporary and traditional Japanese influence. The lobby is relaxing and welcoming. The restaurants were all superb. The swimming pool was a delight. The bedrooms were beautifully appointed with the BEST bathtub ( Japanese style soaking tub) Little details such as a choice of bath salts and the uber-large bath sheet were perfect. The bed was extremely comfortable and of course covered in fantastic linen. The highlight however was the exceptional service. Every single member of staff we encountered was beyond helpful. I hope that the RC matins these high standards as I shall definitely be returning.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a balcony otherwise the windows do not open.

We stayed five nights at the R-C Kyoto in our 20th wedding anniversary. The stay was wonderful. Kyoto is an amazing place, with so much to see, and the R-C is the perfect place to stay. Other travelers reviewing here at Tripadvisor describe it so well there is nothing to add, but to communicate our deep gratitude for such a marvelous service.

We stay there in August, and also the hotel is aesthetically pleasing and all the furniture seems to be of good quality, the rooms design have not been thought through properly. Their most expensive room is like a long sausage, more like a corridor than like a room, the bed is facing a tiny window and a long wall! the second most expensive room is small and it is impossible to have two suitcases open at the same time. The wardrobe is tiny, despite looking rather big. There is a lot of empty space used for glasses and cups..... We were not impressed. On the first day we went down to breakfast at 9.45 and were asked to wait for 20 minutes since they did not have any table for 4 people. I have never been confronted to such a request despite having been in many luxury hotel around the world!
We try to make a booking for their italian restaurant at 5 pm when we came back one afternoon, we waited 10 minutes, when the lady was in the phone, before being attended!
The concierge were not really helpful, was it because the hotel was full and they were totally unable to cope with the amount of requests....It seems that the concierge develops the art of not answering a question, despite talking a lot!
The breakfast spread was good....
We were not impressed at all.

Stayed 3 nights at this wonderful hotel. River runs next to the hotel. Hotel itself is a low-rise masterpiece. The attention to detail is awesome.

The staff. What can one say but they really took good care of us. Nothing was too small.

The Japanese restaurant is a dream. The sushi was out of this world. Chisaki IBA is a great sushi chef. Kenji Fujimoto is great for tempura. Masajiro Miura is the head of the restaurant and deserves great plaudits. Finally, Arimasa Takeo organised a wonderful sake tasting. Local and unpasterised sakes...oh yes!

We will be coming back! Kyoto is a fine city, wonderful people and this hotel provides the topping!

I've had the pleasure of staying at several Ritz Carlton properties and the Kyoto hotel has become one of my favorite. Opulent without being garish, and luxurious yet understated. The hotel perfectly embodies the Japanese wabi-sabi spirit. Having a drink at the bar is simply an amazing experience in itself.

The location is perfect for a short stroll to the narrow alley of Ponto-cho, and perhaps get a glimpse of a pair or trio of geishas. There's also several subway lines near the hotel for farther trips to Gion, and the famous red gates of Fushimi Inari Shrine.

Please do note that this is not a hotel with stunning views, however. In face some rooms overlook cemeteries. Also, many of the staff speak English quite well but one should not expect the same level of proficiency as you'd find at the Tokyo property.

I do not know about you, but when we travel to Asia, we are looking for stylish contemporary luxury resorts where the service is second to none and where we can live great experiences with the safety of a well managed property and find a place to retreat for an early evening relaxing cocktail or enjoy the comfort an italian dinner among the adventures of feeding local.

That is precisely what the Ritz Carlton Kyoto offers. It is located by the riverside, nothing special about the view but the location for activities is great and the decor is very slick and sophisticated. The rooms are great and spacious, well equipped and the spa/fitness is first class.

A remarkable thing for the foodies like us is that the hotel has an association with "Pierre Hermé", the famous chef from "La Durée" in Paris that left years ago to open his own "Macarons" artistry shop on Bonaparte Street in the 6th arrondissement. So when you have breakfast at the Ritz Carlton Kyoto, you almost get Pierre Hermé himself to cook your breakfast. You will find among many things his signature flavor "Ispahan" in the form of croissants, yogurts, etc... and the macarons are to die for.

If we had to go back in Kyoto we would definitely book at the Ritz again. We are typically not fans of Ritz properties which we find often a bit old and decorated with too much gold and mouldings. We like simple, pure and contemporary lines with bare, high quality matter. The Kyoto property has just opened and is precisely that. Thanks to my wife for having such an eye when looking at properties on Kiwi Collection! She selected a great property and so will you if you decide to book at the Ritz in Kyoto.

Room Tip: Ask for the highest floor possible but there are only just a few so 3rd floor is already great!

I just finished reading a negative review of the Ritz Carlton Kyoto, and my jaw is hanging open in disbelief. This hotel was truly our favorite on this trip (above the Mandarin Oriental Tokyo and the Four Seasons Hong Kong) and could possibly be THE best of our many luxury hotel experiences worldwide. From the moment we stepped out of the taxi at the Ritz Kyoto, we were under the excellent care of the very kind staff for our entire stay.

We are a family of five (two adults, three children). We were met upon our arrival by the charming Alexandre, who greeted us by name and made us feel like special guests from the start. Our daughters were quite entertained during our initial check-in by making origami cranes with our delightful guest experience hostess, Ayaka. Our two connecting rooms were absolutely beautiful with plenty of space and lovely details such as pretty bonsai tree, a Nespresso machine and tea brewer, and a beautiful interior design.

One night we dined in the hotel's Italian restaurant, La Locanda. The children (ages 12, 10 and 6) had only two options for a "kid's meal" which were spaghetti bolognese or a Japanese dinner. As we had just come from several days of eating fish three times a day, you can imagine they went straight for the spaghetti (which was divine, by the way). However, one of our girls doesn't much care for bolognese sauce, and I think the waiter must have sensed her disappointment in the menu. The next thing I know, the head chef is at our table asking her what he can make for her. She simply wanted spaghetti with a white sauce, and he made it happen. All three of our girls were so happy, and thus my husband and I were able to relax and enjoy the amazing veal scaloppini created by the masterful Chef Valentino (also a very fun visitor to our table).

Another night we dined in the hotel's Japanese restaurant, Mizuki. We were seated at the sushi counter and were able to watch our sushi chef, Chisaki, perform her magic right in front of us. Her sushi creations were artistic and tasted beyond incredible. She was truly lovely and engaging.

The hotel pool was a great break for the kids in between touring Kyoto. Children can only use the pool until 6:00pm, but we were able to squeeze a couple of quick swims into our late afternoons. On our second visit to the pool, we were given swim caps to wear which I thought was unusual as we were not given swim caps on our first pool visit. It seemed like only a suggestion, and so we did not wear them. Later a spa attendant approached us and asked us to please wear the swim caps, so perhaps it is a requirement? It was unclear.

One night Ayaka escorted us down to the river (just steps from the hotel) to watch the fireflies. This was a real treat for us because we don't have fireflies where we live in the U.S. I watched my girls catch (and release) dozens of fireflies as some Japanese families and older women looked on. It was as if the simple pleasure of interacting with the fireflies was bringing people together, and we were all laughing together even though we didn't speak the same language. It was a very memorable night.

The breakfast selection offered a perfect mix of Western and Asian food. The staff was attentive but not intrusive. One server swiftly and discreetly cleaned up my daughter's spill of chocolate krispie cereal and reset her place setting before I returned from filling my own plate at the buffet. Of course that would be standard procedure to clean up a mess in the dining room, but he did it with such kindness that she didn't feel embarrassed.

I'm not ashamed to say that my eyes filled with tears when we left Kyoto. Japan and its people are truly beautiful. And the Ritz-Carlton Kyoto is the perfect place to stay while visiting Kyoto.

Room Tip: We enjoyed 318/320 with views of the river.
