“Best temple experience!”
Reviewed April 7, 2013

Ninna-ji was my favorite temple during our whole 10 day stay in japan. It has such great architecture (5-story pagodes), the most beautiful ZEN garden i have ever seen and as a bonus you can get inside the buildings and wander around. It also is not very crowded and offers great value for the moderate entrance fee.

absolutely recommend it!

“Undiscovered Gem!”
Reviewed February 18, 2013

Not many people come this far to see Ninna-ji, but the architecture of a formal palace add grandeur to the zen gardens. The extensive grounds also include a pagoda and bell tower, as well as a prayer hall and scripture storage.

“Best Garden in Kyoto”
Reviewed February 16, 2013

Now everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but in my own opinion, Nina-ji has the best garden and landscape ever! It is just so very beautiful and serene, with different shades of greenery, trees, rocks, neatly raked white gravel, ponds and water features...I spent a considerable amount of time simply sitting on the steps alternating between admiring the scenery and quiet, joyful contemplation. I believe if I had more time, I could have been inspired enough to pen some poetry or maybe a couple of songs! Such is the beauty of this place!

“If you like pagodas”
Reviewed January 25, 2013

Pagodas are not very common in Japan, or not as common as I thought they were. This temple has a beautiful 5-storied pagoda, not as tall as the one in Toji, but beautiful nonetheless. It's close to the Ryoanji rock gardens, definitely worth a visit. Also, it was very quiet when I went there - unlike the crowded Ryoanji.

This is not far from Ryoan-ji but I would include it in your itinerary only if you spend two or more days in Kyoto.
