“Slightly overpriced but great location and service”
Reviewed March 28, 2010

We booked our stay at the Aranvert the night before we arrived in Kyoto, so it was very much an impulse decision to stay here. We chose it because it seemed central to a lot of the sights we wanted to see and that's basically it. For what it was, I would not really call it value for money, but at the same time it is a nice hotel and you are definitely not getting ripped off.

We only stayed one night and had one day to explore Kyoto. Not all of the reception staff were that friendly when checking in, but when we checked out the next morning one lady was extremely helpful and let us store our luggage with them for the entire day and helped us to rent bicycles so we could make the most of the one day we had in Kyoto. The bicycles were delivered to the hotel within half an hour for us, and at the end of the day we dropped them back at the hotel when we picked up our luggage. Very handy.

The rooms are a bit 90s but perfectly clean, reasonable sized bathroom and I don't think the rooms are as small and some reviewers on here have stated. I think there is probably some better value accommodation out there in Kyoto but as a last minute decision I definitely do not regret my decision to stay here and it was an all round pleasant experience. Also, breakfast buffet was great... not just Japanese food as another reviewer mentioned.

We only stayed one night at this hotel in February 2010. When we arrived at the Kyoto train station we decided to take the subway to the hotel. The subway could not be any simpler as it is only two major lines. The stop is Gojo Station and the exit to take is 2. Getting out of the exit there are no signs on the buildings in front of you. But start walking a couple of minutes and the hotel appears (various country flags tip you off). The reception staff spoke decent English and checked us in quickly. The room was standard Japanese, not too big, and the furniture appropriate for the star level. Clean and comfortable for just sleeping there. Best of all, I found the public bath on 13th Floor.
After a long day exploring the city you could relax in a hot bath overlooking the city. Beware that in Japanese public baths genders are separated and everybody is in their birthday suit. I woud stay there again.

Getting a hotel in Kyoto appears to be a difficult task, especially at a weekend. Getting a reasonably priced hotel is pretty much impossible.

So, I ended up at the Aranvert, being the only hotel that was even slightly affordable (having changed my budget rather) for my period of stay.

The rooms are quite small and beds quite hard. Indeed, the room barely has enough space to put your luggage out. A chair is squeezed in by the window but no real room to stretch your legs. The bathroom is small and plasticy too, but adequate. Free Internet access is a nice bonus, and there is a moderate sized wardrobe if you wish to use it. Breakfast is entirely Japanese, and reasonably expensive - don't bother unless you like a typical Japanese breakfast.

However, there are plus points - its location is quite good - not great, it's on the edge of the centre of town, but close to the subway and so easy access to station and more central attractions. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

Conclusion - not great value, but then you don't have much choice with Kyoto. Don't be upset if you end up here, it's fine. Just nothing special. Don't apply normal value assessments to the price!
