First of all, this hotel is one of the oldest hotels in the area. And Kyoto is a city where very little change happens. So please manage your expectations when visiting. The hotel is yes old and dated but it is very clean and the staff go out of their way to make your stay exceptional. We stayed in both the western style room and the Japanese style room. The Japanese rooms are in a separate wing and is quite a hike but fun for the experience. The western style rooms in the Starwood preferred floors are bigger than what you usually get in Japan.
The hotel provides a free shuttle from Kyoto station. The train stop is difficult to find if you don't know what you're looking for - look for the uniqlo store in the departmental store. Exit from the exit closest to uniqlo. Look for a sign on the wall directly facing the exit. It's is higher than eye level. The stop is on a little island past all the tour buses. Do not worry if you do not see a sign on the island. Wait and the bus will come. More
