Beautiful hotel in a great area. Public transportation within easy walking distance or taxis ready right outside with friendly door staff. Extremely helpful concierges and front desk staff. The rooms were very large with luxurious products and robes. Highly recommend staying here

The hotel is near a tube station, it is on walking distance from many of the temples. The room we stayed in was spacious and clean and the staff is very helpful. Breakfastbuffet was fantastic with so many choices eventhough a bit noicy.

After much deliberation between this and Granvia, we decided to book the Westin for our 4 night stay in Kyoto. I was initially concerned about the location, as I was meant to bring my dad who has some trouble walking long distances. He then cancelled and so I decided to stay away from Kyoto station.

Location wise, it is not that bad. The shuttle bus brings you to 3 locations every 30 minutes (Kyoto Station is one of them), and it is only a 2 minute walk from Kaega subway station. Kyoto is spread out so if you intend to visit all 4 corners of the city, you will need to take public transport anyway, so staying here is not a problem.

Rooms - we took the traditional Japanese room, which was a nice experience. I suspect they could be better than the normal Western style rooms which I read were a bit dated. The traditional room has the 'Heavenly Futon' which makes for great sleep, and I enjoyed the traditional shower and tub. Great way to experience the Japanese stay, at a reputable chain hotel, without luxurious ryokan prices.

My only complaint is the concierge service. Firstly, the girl manning the desk when we arrived was not too friendly. When asked for dinner recommendations, she spelt out the name of the restaurant, without bothering to inform us that the signage of the restaurant was going to be in Japanese (no English spelling), obviously knowing that we were foreign and would not be able to match the spelt out name to its Japanese characters. She did the same thing the next day, when we asked for lunch recommendations. I had smartened up by then (considering we went around in circles the night before looking for our dinner) and asked her if there would be English spelling on these restaurants - to which she said No. I then had to ask her to write out the Japanese characters for me so I could match the characters to the signage. I am surprised, because it should be common sense when dealing with foreign tourists - you should know better than to assume that we can read Japanese.

Second, and most annoying - the concierge at the Westin requires you to sign an agreement letter and give your credit card authorisation for EVERY restaurant booking you make through them, even if it is at a small izakaya. I had initially emailed them from Tokyo requesting them to make a reservation at the 1-Michelin star Tenyou, and they came back to me asking me to sign the letter, pick my menu and authorise payment for the whole lunch before they would confirm the booking. I only realised after that this was NOT a restaurant requirement, but a Westin requirement. If I had known it was a hotel requirement I would have called the restaurant myself and made the booking. I only realised this when, on the 2nd night, I called them up from my room and asked that they make reservations for me at a small izakaya for dinner that night. She insisted I go to the concierge myself, sign the agreement and give my credit card details. In the end I just called the izakaya myself and made the reservation - quick and simple.

Thank you for taking time to write your recent stay with us on Tripadvisor. We are glad to hear that you had a pleasant sleep on heavenly futon in Japanese room. Kasuien, is an outstanding example of traditional noble Japanese house, has 20 Japanese rooms. Its gardens and guest rooms give a true sense of refined harmony within nature. We value your feedback in regards to our concierge and appreciate the thought you have put in. It will assist us in further improving our service. We are willing to assist you recommend restaurants and tours in Kyoto as you request but local custom vary from place to place. There is certainly strong tie and relationship with people in Kyoto. We respect the way they do so that we would like our guests to understand the bond of relationship. Hope that we will have the opportunity to welcome you again sometime in the future.

My partner & I stayed here last week and it was absolutely fabulous! After staying in Shinjuku for the past 3 nights, we decided we would head to Kyoto for 2 nights. We booked the Westin the night before we decided to leave. Not hearing much about the Hotel we were interested to see what it was like. When we arrived all the staff were so helpful and very friendly! Took our bags for us straight away and showed us to the check in desk. Once checked in they took us straight upto our fabulous room and helped put our luggage inside. The room was like a palace compared to our accommodation in Shinjuku! The bathroom was beautiful, 2 massive beds, couch, even a business area. We couldn't get over what a beautiful room we had for the cheap price we paid! The location was great to! You can walk to a couple of temples and the shuttle that runs every 30 minutes makes it easy for transport. All the staff were always willing to help with any request we had. The concierge spoke great English & gave us a list of things to do & see while we were there. We will definitely be heading back to Kyoto and staying at the Westin without a doubt! I would recommend this place to everyone who decides to visit Kyoto.

Had checked out the reviews and been concerned the hotel was out of the way. Not the case: it's actually well positioned, very near a metro station: and you can walk easily from the hotel to several temples. The shuttle ran every 30 minutes to and from train station: excellent. And the staff were always perfectly friendly: good help from the concierge.

On the not so good, while everything is tidy and clean, it just appears dated and boxlike. The rooms could have great views but instead the windows are relatively small compared to more modern. The breakfast area is internal with almost no natural light. Breakfast was OK, but not as good as expect from a Westin. The executive lounge overlooks a balcony that cuts the view out.

On the executive lounge, this was one of the weakest I have been to. We only saw 1 other couple there the whole time: the reason being was no atmosphere and no reason to go there. Except for a couple of hours, drinks were limited to jugs of water, grapefruit & orange and a coffee dispenser. Snacks were two bowls of biscuits and some pretzels. Staff were polite, but that wasn't enough

So overall, nothing unpleasant/nothing bad: some good memories as the hotel is fine in many ways and well positioned. But not at the level one normally sees from a top-rank Sheraton/Westin

Room Tip: Wouldn't waste a cent on the Executive Level.
