The Westin Miyako may seem a bit dated by modern standards, but more than makes up for this by having large rooms (ours had an amazing view of the city), very considerate and helpful staff and a secret weapon - the beautiful Japanese garden on the the 7th floor. After a full day sightseeing in a city that can feel overwhelming I'd suggest a peaceful walk in the beautiful Japanese garden (7th floor) - it's the perfect antidote to crowded temples and shrines which can overwhelm many travellers. From the garden you can walk a short birdwatching trail - or just enjoy the peace and quiet and survey the city below. All the staff I encountered spoke English and were more than helpful, and the "viking style" breakfast lived up to it's namesake!
