I stayed at Gojo Guesthouse for 5 nights in the 4 bed female dorm and 3 of those nights Ihad the room to myself. What a great experience this place was. Their futons are very comfy, the air conditioner works wonderfully, the staff is extremely kind and are very accommodating! The cafe downstairs is chill, the staff have a good choice of music, and you pay less for stuff because you're staying upstairs. They serve alcoholic beverages and non, the non alcoholic beverages are a little pricey so you should probably just head to the 7-11 just a minute walk from the front door.

Be aware that there is the Gojo Guesthouse and Cafe and the Gojo Guesthouse Annex. Don't just Google the guesthouse and try to find your way because it'll take you to the Annex not the Cafe! Definitely follow the directions you're emailed to the T!

Gion is basically right next to this place, the actual Gion bus stop is 2 bus stops down from Gojozaka (the nearest major bus stop/terminal). Kyoto station is maybe 15-20 minutes from it by bus. Kiyomizudera is just down the road (seriously, 10 minute walk to the mouth of the road to Kiyomizudera) There's a few restaurants right near the hostel but you can find other places with just a few more minutes of walking. The subway is just down the road, maybe a 5 minute walk.

They rent bikes, sell day bus passes, have a coin washer(200yen) and dryer(100yen for 20 minutes) but they also have a place you can hang your stuff to dry if you don't want to or can't put it in the dryer. They have a little kitchen with a community fridge, microwave, a hotplate and dishes you can borrow and then wash. The showers were good, it's mixed shower stalls but they have floor to ceiling walls on the stalls so its alright. There is a Japanese toilet upstairs and 2 western style toilets downstairs.

They have a great lounge which doubles as the cafe. During my stay they had a gyoza party and a pizza party. I don't know how frequent these happen but they were fun and the staff did an awesome job getting people to participate and make even an introvert like me feel like I was at a party with friends from home.

For those like me who dont particularly enjoy stairs, they are the only way up and down so if you don't like stairs, you're kind of out of luck.

Still, stay here, its amazing. Nuff said! :P

Fantastic little guesthouse. Located at the south end of Higashiyama (the east side of Kyoto). Higashiyama is where most of the famous sightseeing places are such as shrines and temples. This guesthouse is a straight shot down the road from Kiyomizudera, Kyoto's most famous temple. About a 15 minute walk up the river to Kiyamachi, the nightlife center of Kyoto. Same distance to Shijo Kawaramachi. Kyoto's downtown shopping area and famous Teramachi st. is located between Shijo st. and Sanjo st.

Super friendly staff with a nice cafe on the first floor where you can eat and drink with fellow travelers. Very clean place. Highly recommend it. I've been to Kyoto many times and this is one of the best places I've found.

We stayed two nights at this place and absolutely loved it.
The location is very good, close to main buses and trains.
The staff was extremely nice and helpful with all our needs (I forgot a shirt there and they shipped it back to me for free, emails were answered in a very timely fashion with all the information needed, they also sold us bus tickets after spending 30 minutes helping us decide what to do the next day and organizing public transportation).
You get a free drink when you check-in (not just beer! I tried plum wine, delicious!), and can enjoy it in the common areas (that also have spaces for little groups around short tables). As in all the places in Japan you can smoke inside but the hostel does not smell at all.
We were in a dormitory, with comfortable linen, and extra plugs so that everyone could plug many devices.
Shared bathrooms are clean and spacious. There is free soap and shampoo.
I strongly recommend this place, whether you're on a tight budget or not!

This guesthouse was quite an experience in itself, complementing my tour of Kyoto with its traditional ambiance, rustic facade and interior, and the mellow and old aura it exudes. It felt like I was transported back in time and I loved it. I think this is a great choice if one wants to experience authentic and traditional Japan at great value.

There's a cafe at the first floor, which also serves as the reception and the guesthouse lobby. After check-in the staff will provide a coupon which you can use the following morning to avail a free drink. The guesthouse interior look really fancy, giving that old feel of Japan. The rooms are clean and spacious with traditional futon mats. Both private rooms and dorm rooms are available. However, if you are a light sleeper and wants a quiet place to sleep soundly, this may not be an ideal choice. The walls are very thin and you can hear every bit of noise from the other rooms, including the footsteps and snores of other guests. It would be really useful to put earplugs on. In terms of amenities, the guesthouse has a mini kitchen, refrigerator, and microwave. The restrooms at the second floor are Japanese style and you will need to go down for the typical Western-type toilets. The staffs speak excellent English and are very helpful too. As with many other hostels in Japan, you can rent a bike for a day to tour the area.

In terms of location, the guesthouse is about just 20 minutes away from Kyoto station by bus and very close to some sightseeing places. It is an easy 10-minute walk to Kyoto's main attractions such as Kiyomizudera Temple and Gion District. The guesthouse is in front of the main road and you need to pay attention when looking for the building, otherwise you might miss it.

From Kyoto Station it is accessible by Kyoto City buses nos. 100 & 206 (Gojozaka Stop) and about a 5 minute walk (400 meters). Be sure to avail of the unlimited Kyoto Bus Day Pass (Y500) as buses are the ideal transport to tour around Kyoto. It'll save you bucks of money!

My wife and our 3 children spent a week at the Gojo Guest house. What a great experience! We stayed in the triple room, which is at the back of the property. It was very quiet, and we especially loved the sliding paper and glass windows.
We ended up having breakfast there almost every morning, a nice thick piece of toast with honey or jam and tea, coffee or juice for just ¥300. Very tasty.
There was one morning when the water heater at the showers was not turned on, and we had to wait until someone turned it on later in the morning. Showers were always clean and had good water pressure.
We used the map they gave us upon check in every day. The river is a short walk away, and there are lots of options for restaurants nearby. Also, a grocery store is nearby on the corner near the subway exit, and there is a kitchen area in the guest house that you can use as well.
We did not see any other families at the guest house, it seemed as though it was mostly single travelers.

Room Tip: The Triple was very nice and quiet.

Stayed here with 2 friends in November 2013 and wished I could have stayed there longer!
I started looking for places much too late, and was lucky enough that a room suddenly freed up here. A private room for all three of us! (advice: book early)
The staff is extremely helpful, there is a bar downstairs where you can drink your free beer (or other beverage) while you plot out you Kyoto itinerary.
The house is also charming and it is tough to find traditional japanese style places at this price!
It's a fairly short walk up to Gion and Kawaramachi, as well as kiyomizudera.
The subway is also very close.
Thank you for a great stay!

Stayed here two times, and will always come back!

This was the second accommodation we tried in Kyoto, and we were totally blown away. From a thoroughly enjoyable few beers with the bar staff and owners the day we arrived, so immaculate and spacious rooms on both our stays, Gojo Guest house is an experience you just can't afford to miss.

The traditional bedding and small tables get a bit of getting used to (especially if you're tall), but the overall experience is well worth it.

Staff were great, atmosphere was great, and the other travellers we met there all shared the same opinion. 5/5!

Room Tip: It is a traditional Guest house, so be expecting an interesting (but still great) sleeping experienc...
