Karasuma Kyoto Hotel
Ranked #66 of 374 Hotels / Ryokan in Kyoto
Reviewed June 3, 2014

I stayed there for one night but it is incredibly unforgettable. This hotel is located in best area in Kyoto where you can easily access shopping area, foods, leisure places and last but not least, subway station called Shijo, where from there you can reach the whole of the city.

Room is clean even though the door ceiling is bit low. Breakfasting while facing the front street is also another best experience you have when you stay in this hotel. So when you are going to Kyoto, I totally recommend this hotel as best place tot stay. Cheers ...

Our room was spacious, clean and comfy. Location was also good, near the station and quite central. The staff were polite and helpful. We did not get breakfast so cant comment on that. Would like to stay here again :)

We were happy to find out that the hotel was located right next to the subway station! The staff was very polite and helpful during our stay. Check in is nice and early, 12pm. The rooms are average size (but big for japan standards). Our room was very clean, although outdated. Pillows were soft, beds were comfy. One downside, there was no wifi in our room. We had to go downstairs to the lobby for internet. They have 2 computers that you can use. The hotel is located close to downtown Kyoto. We paid $120 (incl taxes) per night. Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the Karasuma!

The hotel is well located, close to various modes of transportation as well as a nice shopping area. Free WiFi is only available in the hotel lobby, which gets crowded at times. Rooms are clean and well kept. There are an abundant array of restaurants in the area. Don't miss the food market and sample its many delights. Good breakfast selections. Rooms are spacious for Japan. Recommended

My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights on our trip around Japan traveling on a group tour. The Travel Agency had booked the rooms for our group. We found the hotel clean and well maintained. The breakfast buffet at the hotel is very good and one can find almost everything. We found the service extremly friendly.
The hotel is locatet next to the Metro and one have all the tourist location in eacy reach. One can get anywhere very easily, inexpensively and quickly. One have easy acces to a lot of small bars and restaurants not far away from the hotel. And a Stabucks on the ground floor.
Our room was modern, a spacy one, bigger than normal hotel rooms in Japan. We have asked for a twin and a high floor. We got both and at the higest flort, 14th, with a great view. The room, the bathroom was clean. Slippers, toothbrush, fridge, flat screen TV etc. The bathroom were one of a kind of today: Small prefabricated one but as everything in Japan effecienand. With bath-tub. Of course in Japan a toilet with heated seat. Free wifi in the lobby NOT in the room (only via cabel) and that is unacceptable for today.
We would definitely stay here again! The biggest plus is its location.

Room Tip: Get a twinn room on a high floor

We stayed for 3 nights, hotel is close to Nishiki market & main st. Nice little Japanese restaurant next to the hotel. Only 2 subway stops from Kyoto station. Wifi only available in the reception.
If you only had 1 or 2 nights in Kyoto probably wouldn't stay here as there are many hotels right at Kyoto station & lugging your bags to get to this hotel maybe a bit annoying. But overall had a lovely stay

Kyoto has a different dynamic compared to Tokyo, and so has the hotels. This one is not bad, but definetely not good either. Consider all options and choose the one with best value.
Location: very good, the strongest decision point to stay there. Near subway and bus stops. It even possible to walk to the main train station (like I did) if you feel like. Many shops, restaurants and atractions at walking distance. Subway is easy to ride.
General atmosphere: it looks like a 1970 hotel that is still fighting. For today standards it is absolutely outdated, even more when you have expectations of finding everything new and modern in Japan.
Rooms: quite spacious, but it still has a very old feeling. Very clean. Small bathroom (prefabricated) bu effecient. No wifi in room (unacceptable for today).
Price: not bad, since it was booked well in advance. But be aware, the hotel doesn't deserve all that.
I didn't know but I found out that I could have stayed in Osaka instead (which offers better hotels) and commute to Kyoto easily. Kyoto, Osaka and Kobe are extremely well connected and it is a breeze travelling through them. This could only possible in a logiscally advanced country like Japan. I would only stay here again it the place really improves.
