“A lovely park near the Yasaka shrine”
Reviewed September 23, 2013

There is a nice pond and this is a bit of a relief to visit after the crowds of Jishu shrine and the surrounding streets.

“Great place to walk and enjoy Japanese shrines and garden”
Reviewed July 2, 2013

This is a very big park. Beautiful gardens. Some shrines along the way. It is supposed to be very beautiful during the Cherry blossom season. Since we visited in June, all we saw were awesome views of greenery, gardens and ponds. A great place to explore.

“The perfect hanami spot!”
Reviewed May 1, 2013

If you are in Kyoto during cherry blossom, this park is a must.
Go once during daytime and once at sunset.
Sit down under the trees and buy something to eat or drink.

“Go There At Night During Cherry Blossom Season”
Reviewed April 30, 2013

During sakura (cherry blossom) season typically early April, Maruyama Park is a great viewing and "hanami" spot. There are a large number of cherry trees and there are a lot of vendors set up their shops (more like food stands) in the park, so you can sample local street food while enjoying blooming sakura. Outside of cherry blossom season, it would be just another park with not much to see.

The main attraction during cherry blossom season is surely the large weeping sakura tree at the middle of the park which is illuminated at night. We found it a stunning sight! It was good during the day but definitely had more wow factor at night!

The only negative thing I found was that it's very difficult to avoid the crowd (if you go there too early, the shops won't be open). I guess you just need to immerse yourself in party like atmosphere of "hanami" in Japan.

One last recommendation: if you have a tripod, bring it. You will need it to take a good picture of illuminated weeping cherry tree at night (during cherry blossom season).

“Perfect Place for Hanami in Cherry Blossom Season!”
Reviewed April 21, 2013

Like I said on the tittle, Maruyama Park is a perfect place for Hanami in Cherry Blossom Season in Japan. I went to this place on early April 2013. I traveled alone, but accidentally meet someone on the bus by the time I was on my way to this place. She told me that I very lucky because I visit Japan at the best time, when all the cherry trees are in full bloom, Maruyama Park has became Kyoto's most popular and most crowded spot for cherry blossom viewing parties (Hanami).

Maruyama park is open for public, there is no cost to enter this attraction. Inside the park, there is a Yasaka shrine which allowed everyone to pray and make a wish. The center of the park there is a tall Cheery Tree called Shidarezakura.

This park is extremely attractive, because when I came to this place there is a small festival with so many food and souvenir stalls built around the path of walk. You can easily find traditional Japanesse foods, like Takoyaki, Onokomiyaki, Udon, Soba, and so many interesting foods that you never tried before. Lucky, I found a "ghost house" inside the festival, it cost only JPY 500 for adult to enter this little spooky attraction. It's so freaking funny! :D

Here some pictures that I took in Maruyama Park. Enjoy!
