Owner description: This scenic path follows cherry-tree lined canal and is named after a Kyoto University philosopher, Kitaro Nishida, who used it for his daily walk.

If you are pressed for time and are expecting some touristy, highly maintainted, botanical garden - then this is not for you.

However, if you would like to have a leisurely stroll along a canal with no tourists and just your thoughts - then this is for you.

I saw some of the previous comments and I dont know what they were expecting - but this met my expectations. You walk through a residential area which is very relaxing and well kept. But at the same time - dont expect disneyland! Its just a peaceful stroll and there are many temples and shrines along the way so you have to allow yourself enough time to understand the meaning. Its not about the destination - but the journey. Grab a snack and a nice cold coffee - hold a loved ones hand and discuss life as you walk along a very natural, un-touristy, uncrowded part of Kyoto.

I would recommend it to see the un-toursity side of Kyoto.

It is a pleasant enough walk, but unless you really like ambling along, then there are more rewarding things to do with your time.

Just a walk along a small stream lined with trees and houses. Plants were unkempt and the place was not clean. Felt like I was walking in a back alley. After Kinkakuji, the Philosopher's Walk was a negative counterpoint.

Don't be fooled. This walk is just a path along a stream. Not worth your time. (No English explanation on why it is "philosophical" or how it came about)

I'd visited Kyoto six times during my six-month assignment in Japan, but I hadn't visited the Philosopher's Walk before I came for a full-day cherry blossom viewing marathon. So-named for a Japanese philosopher that would walk these canals daily, the path follows a canal between Ginkaku-ji and Nanzen-ji. On the day I visited (April 10, 2011), the cherry blossoms were at their peak, creating soft clouds of blossoms along the canal. It was an absolutely gorgeous stroll that yielded several memorable photographs on the way to Ginkaku-ji; just be prepared for the large number of (Japanese) tourists you'll encounter along the canals during hanami. You'll find plenty of pleasant cafes along the canal that are a perfect stopping point for an ice cream or coffee.
