Owner description: Arashiyama is a small town on the Oi River. Its moon-crossing bridge, Togetsu-kyo, is a beautiful, much-beloved wooden structure. Arishiyama also has Tenryu-ji temple, one of the 14 World Heritage Sites in Kyoto.

“Nice place to spend a day”
Reviewed May 22, 2013

This is a nice place for couples to spend a day.
You can see the bamboo forest, rent a small boat to run the shallow river and slowly walk through the streets to see the shops and eventually stop for a lunch/dinner in one of the restaurants. The place can be crowded but it seemed that it is calm and quiet most of the time.

“Lovely day trip from Kyoto”
Reviewed May 21, 2013

To find the real gems in Arashiyama, make sure you take the time to explore the temples and gardens up in the mountains away from the train station.

Tenryū-ji and the main bamboo grove were definitely worth the visit but it was once we got away from the crowds that we really fell in love with Arashiyama and could see what all the fuss was about (we found that the further you got from the station, the less crowded it was.

“Best places to visit in Arashiyama - Bamboo Forest, Togetsukyo Bridge, Tenruyu-ji Temple and gardens”
Reviewed May 20, 2013

This is less then 30 minutes train ride to Saga Arashiyama Station from Kyoto Station and worth a day visit; although we stayed overnight so the trip was not so rushed. We visited the Bamboo Forest, temples, garden, and shopped for souvenirs while we people watched little girls dressed like geishas, and the jinpu, a traditional rickshaw pulled by these tan, fit and good looking guys (I didn’t get on them for the reason that I felt guilty ... maybe next time)

Loved Saga Arashiyama, one of the highlights of our trip, so much to see Bamboo Grove, Monkey Park, great streets filled with shops and places to eat, lots to do

Reading others reviews I can see that many people enjoyed Arishyama and i think it's wonderful that they did. Personally, and maybe I was too spoilt by the temples in Kyoto, but after spending four days enjoying the temples, shrines and gardens in Kyoto proper, I felt very underwhelmed by Arishyama. I don't think it's worth the trip. The famous bridge is just a bridge-nothing spectacular. The bamboo forest was okay but not as dense and big as I'd thought it would be, and Tenryu-Ji was okay, but yet again nothing spectacular. But as they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
