Owner description: Arashiyama is a small town on the Oi River. Its moon-crossing bridge, Togetsu-kyo, is a beautiful, much-beloved wooden structure. Arishiyama also has Tenryu-ji temple, one of the 14 World Heritage Sites in Kyoto.

“Trus old style japan!!”
Reviewed March 16, 2013 via mobile

If you want to see old style japan then definitely come here! It's super easy (catch the train from kyoto station - 20 mins) just ask the attendent which station.
Totally different experience from the city!
Amazing photo opportunities!! River is beautiful in winter and would be simply stunning in summer. Didnt want to waste money on more temples but have the SOY ICE CREAM-DELICIOUS!!! :):):)

“Get on ya Bike!!!!!”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

Hire a bike from the guys near the train station, and ride around the beautiful streets of Arashiyama!!!!!
The area is very spread out, but is easily doable on two wheels, even if you are only of a moderate fitness level!!!!!
Take your money with you too, as there are lots of little hidden shops that have some great souvenirs and traditional foods!!!!!

“lovely, but shorter walk than thought”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

Easy to get to if you're in Kyoto.
We stayed in Hotel Monterey and took the subway to Nijo, then changed to the JR Sagano line to Arishiyama.
It's easy to then walk to the bamboo forest.
We actually walked to Iwatayama (the monkey park) first, over the bridge.
We then crossed back over the bridge, turned left, then walked down the river and entered the park through the back entrance.
Note that the bamboo bit isn't the whole park, just part of it.
Well the rest of the park is nice and relaxing.
The bamboo bit is really something to see - the bamboo is so tall!
There is a path that you walk through - you can't just randomly stroll amongst it (which i kind of thought that you would be) - but I suppose if they let everyone do that the bamboo would be damaged.

Go! The whole area is a nice day out.

Getting there you take a above ground trolley to the last stop and it is like going back in time in Japan. Simply breathtaking. Make sure to go up the hill to the Monkey mountain after crossing the bridge...wow...

“Must visit!”
Reviewed March 2, 2013

This little village is not a long ride from Kyoto and is wonderful to stroll through the streets of.

It is situated near a river, but by far the best thing we did was to get lost in the streets looking at the beautiful gardens and day to day life in Japan.

There are a lot of shops where you can buy souvenirs (the good ones) to take home.

It was one of the highlights of our trip.
