“Far from the city centre...”
Reviewed August 29, 2012

It is worth visiting this place especially during the winter time. The scenery is stunning with white snow. You can take a calender like photos there.

But the thing is, it is located quite far from the city centre of Kyoto. You need to take either a long bus trip directly from the city centre, or take subway first to Kokusai Kaikan station and take a bus. If you go there in winter time,be noted that the pathway to the temple is quite slippery.

“A lovely temple near the shrine”
Reviewed July 30, 2012

Most of the tourists head to the nearby Yasaka Shrine. But if you head north from the shrine gate on Highashi Dori (I hope I have the street name right) there is a lovely, quiet temple. The garden is simply lovely, and you can sit for hours there if you have the time and see only a handful of other people. A welcome respite from the crowds.

We walked through this temple and gardens in the pouring rain and was a beautiful experience. The gardens were so peaceful and beautiful. I would highly recommend the trip out to the Sanzen-in Temple if you have the time.

“Charming glimpse of rural Japan”
Reviewed May 13, 2012

If you want to touch the heart of rural Japan, go to Ohara. You’ve got few opportunities to reach there. From Kyoto station the fastest way is to take the Karasuma subway line to the Kokusaikaikan station and then Kyoto city bus No 19 to Ohara. The other way is by bus No 17 or 18 (bus stop C-3) from Kyoto station or No 16 or 17 from Sanjo Keihan station. Once you get to the Ohara main bus stop follow the signs up the hill along arcade of souvenir stalls. Sanzenin Temple is located a ten minute walk. This is a picturesque large temple with a variety of buildings and gardens, nice walking area and no closing days. Take some time to sit and enjoy the impressive garden, then walk through the moss. Yusei-en is one of the most photographed gardens in Japan. There are a number of amusing stone statues hidden in the moss and other interesting spot are rows of miniature statues of Kannon Don’t miss to taste a sweet green tea with golden flakes and also strange salty plum tea, again with golden flakes.

“A bit of a trip, but well worth it”
Reviewed April 2, 2012

We had a spare morning before leaving Kyoto and decided to take the trip up into the hills to see this stunning garden. The trip takes about 1 hour each way and can be reached either through a single bus trip from downtown Kyoto, or a combination of subway and public bus (see the very helpful link at http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3955.html). Part of the charm of the visit is that you're out in the countryside and get to see another part of the Kansai area. The temple and garden itself is meticulously maintained and really quite beautiful. I can imagine that autumn would be the best time to visit, but early Spring was great nevertheless.
