“A bit of a trip, but well worth it”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 2, 2012

We had a spare morning before leaving Kyoto and decided to take the trip up into the hills to see this stunning garden. The trip takes about 1 hour each way and can be reached either through a single bus trip from downtown Kyoto, or a combination of subway and public bus (see the very helpful link at http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3955.html). Part of the charm of the visit is that you're out in the countryside and get to see another part of the Kansai area. The temple and garden itself is meticulously maintained and really quite beautiful. I can imagine that autumn would be the best time to visit, but early Spring was great nevertheless.

I like this temple very much because of its quietness, located far from the city crowdness and people, take you time to visit this neighborhood.

“One of my favorites…”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 8, 2012

… out of the way of the regular tourist traffic, in the northern part of Kyoto, it is a quiet spot where you can sit down and reflect, surrounded by the beautiful temples and nature…

“way out of kyoto, but truly worth the trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 30, 2011

i went to sanzen-in because a close friend recommended it. i had not heard of it much on travel sites/blogs. it is quite a bit out of kyoto, north-east from the shijo/karasuma area...takes about an hour to get there on the kyoto bus. for people who buy the one-day pass, please note that pass does not cover your trip to sanzen-in.

the temple is located on fairly large undulating ground. there are several small temples in the compound. there are japanese tea-shops that offer really nice tea and sweets. one of the temples has a tea offering where you look out on the gardens surrounding the temple - that is a really good experience!
