this temple and this setting are just about my favorite in Kyoto. Sublime at certain seasons.

i went to sanzen-in because a close friend recommended it. i had not heard of it much on travel sites/blogs. it is quite a bit out of kyoto, north-east from the shijo/karasuma area...takes about an hour to get there on the kyoto bus. for people who buy the one-day pass, please note that pass does not cover your trip to sanzen-in.

the temple is located on fairly large undulating ground. there are several small temples in the compound. there are japanese tea-shops that offer really nice tea and sweets. one of the temples has a tea offering where you look out on the gardens surrounding the temple - that is a really good experience!

This atmosphere is unbeatable. So ancient and religious. Visit this temple in the morning because it can become quite crowded (we were the first visitors - that was the ony possibilty to take our picture without other visitors).

The Sanzen-in Temple is about an hour from Kyoto station by bus. It's a little getaway, particularly if you have visited the more famous and popular sights in Kyoto. The temple grounds are serene and beautiful (I was there in the summer - I understand it gets busy in Autumn as with the entire Kyoto). Look out for the stone Buddha heads on the ground - quite unique.

it's a 15-minute walk from the bus stop to the temple, and there are many temples/gardens along the way/around there (each requiring separate admission). it's a bit out of the way, but if you have a lot of time in kyoto and saw all the other main attractions, then maybe you wouldn't mind taking the time to get there for a half-day trip
