The station is quite huge, consists of Isetan dept store, the cube, porta, asty road and aventi. All these are shopping areas and have restaurants. Porta is our favorite. The prices of goods in all these areas (except Isetan) are reasonable and many small shops to choose, including many quality names like muji. Isetan is expensive and staffs perhaps outnumber customers who do real purchases; a tradition model that has not changed for decades, but not sure how long it can last. The food court in the basement is interesting and is always crowded, esp in the afternoon dinner time. Many good food can be found there. Japanese like sweets and their cakes are excellent, comparable to those in Vienna or Switzerland, but much cheaper. In sum, a place that one can spend a lot of time during a visit to Kyoto.

This is not just a railway station but includes a huge twelve storey mall and a hotel inside the station . Can spend hours here window shopping and watching the hustle and bustle . Visited the station once for shopping and once for boarding the nazomi bullet train to tokyo

Ever want to see a giant grey train station? This is the one for you! Convenience stores and possibly lunch await at the gateway to Kyoto!

If you are in the area for awhile you will be using this vast station at some point. It is very beautiful and clean. It has everything from large scale shopping, gifts stores, convenient stores and restaurants of all types within walking distance
Train and bus connections can be a little confusing so plan of a few extra minutes. Locker storage works great if needed at ¥300, ¥500 and ¥700 with many locations. Price is for 24 hours!
As with any large station it can get pretty busy mid-day so plan accordingly.
Kyoto Century Hotel is just to the right of the central entrance. Highly recommended.
