If you ever want to learn about Japan, Kyoto is the place. Wonderful, you can sit there all day long, just breath, look and think. Of course we shall return :-)

Large grounds with many gardens (unfortunately, each one seems to have an additional entrance fee). If you are a painter or admire brushwork, go to the main building and buy a ticket for a tour (in Japanese) that is the only way to get inside to see a 36-foot diameter dragon painting on the ceiling. It's worth it! There are no tours fron 11:30 am - 2:10 pm or some such odd time, so try to get there in the morning. It's a 20-minute walk from Ryoanji.

I loved strolling around this palace. So many great things to see and the grounds are huge. Same with the statues. Some people have the notion of when you go to one temple you've gone to them all. Not at all when it comes to this one. It is uncomparable to the others. Kyoto has 100's upon 100's of temples. Enjoy each and every one. I traveled with a tour group, so most of the fees were taken care of. However, if you travel on your own, get to the site early, also if you are traveling with kids, it is accessible for them and wheelchairs.

This is a large compound and you can spend some time viewing most of the buildings and grounds outdoors, but if they have the tour available (even if it's in Japanese) be sure to go inside the Hatto, which houses the national treasure bell from the year 698 that they will play (even though it's a recording, it's interesting). And look at the ceiling for the dragon painting that is said to follow you even when you move around the room. Amazing simple architecture for a building that was built in 1656.

The real showplace of the grounds though is the subtemple grounds at Taizo-In. These are the most beautiful gardens we saw during our stay in Japan, and you might miss them if you don't look for the entrance. Go feed the koi fish and enjoy the serenity.

Well located, near Myoshin, Ryoan, Kinkaku. Huge with many areas not of great tourist interest. But head for the inner temple garden of Taizo-in. Upon entering the Taizo area, notice the two triangular gravel gardens, one chocolate in color and quite unique. Then continue to the "Dragon-back Falls", so beautiful. And for a deeper learning experience look for the painting of "How to catch a catfish with a gourd."
