The garden of the Hojo is one of the most serene gardens that I have ever seen. Actually seen is not the right word to use as the peace and harmony in the garden are felt in all senses. Take your shoes off at the entrance and pay the entrance fee - well earned. Well worth the visit!

A little off the beaten track, nice bridge to the complex and interesting designs that mix modern with traditional

The bridge entering the temple over a forest of trees and the view of the San-Mon gate was delightful.
A film directors paradise as so many places to use as centre pieces for pictures.

i was a little disappointed that you had to keep paying to go to 3 different gardens in this temple making it the most expensive temple we visited in the whole of Kyoto.
The moss garden was burnt to a crisp and was not very nice to look at.
The garden which goes across the wooden bridge is lovely and well worth visiting.

A little disappointing when you have to keep paying particularly when it isn't looking at its best. The zen type garden was nice but not that impressive but there was very few tourists here so it was nice and peaceful.

This is one of the best "small" temples in Kyoto. Unlike the bustling crowds of Kinkakuji or Kiyomizudera, if you come here on a week day you might share the grounds with less than 20 people. You actually get the full "peaceful" experience here, especially at the branch temple at the top of the stairs after you cross the bridge, I remember spending almost an hour sitting in the garden with anyone else coming in or out.

Avoid the fall leaves period as the hordes of domestic and foreign tourists turn this place into a scene from a Tokyo rush hour station. As we'll remember to wear socks as you have to remove your shoes in the temple grounds. Also, the two branch temples have separate entrance fees, so be prepared to pay a couple extra hundred yen.
