Oil Street guesthouse is the perfect guesthouse to discover Kyoto. It is clean, spacious and authentic. Yasu, the host servers a great breakfast and is super helpfull. He is fluent in English and can tell you exactly where to go. Yasu reserverd tickets for us for the Geisha dance and made table reservations for a super nice restaurant that we never would have found without his help. He got us a map of the city upon arrival and the bikes are a are great. I would definitely go back.

This is the best guest house and space that we can find in Kyoto. Wonderful open space when you enter with great sense of decorations. The hosts are kind and helpful, and they will make you feel home right away. They sometimes organize cultural events, and they keep the space alive! Everything is so clean and the dog is adorable. I would recommend this place to anyone who loves Japan :-)

We stayed here 4 nights in total and it was honestly the perfect place for us. It allows you to experience a traditional Japanese place, yet with modern comfort and kids friendly!

We have 3 kids (5y, 3y and 1y) and the fact that there is a large common living area as well a kitchenette make it so much easier with little kids as you don't always have to go to a restaurant and you are not stuck to just your own room. Burrito, the dog, made sure the kids were well entertained.

The area is a local residential area and it allows you to feel a bit how people live in Japan. Also, do try the communal bathing place just around the corner, especially after a rainy day!

Noise easily spreads throughout the traditional wooden house so I wouldn't recommend putting people that want to meditate together with a young family, but this is up to Yasu to manage (which he will surely do).

Both being designers and having a specific idea in our heads of the kind of spaces we like, it normally takes us a little while to decide on our accommodation when we travel. Yasu's beautifully restored machiya house was a perfect pick for us - beautiful, large, light rooms, uncluttered and tastefully decorated. The breakfast was superb as well, beautiful ingredients.
Staying in the Nishijin Textile area was a real treat, we loved getting a peek into some of the factories and their beautiful old machines. It was also nice to see a cute little suburban slice of Kyoto, a little away from the tourist hot spots.
The nature of a machiya is that sound travels easily though, so if you value sound privacy highly I would suggest a different kind of accommodation.
It's a small place (only two rooms) which allows Yasu to look after his guests in detail. So it's a good place if you like the personal touch.

Yasu's inn is a beautifully restored traditional machiya house with modern conveniences (wifi, ensuite bathrooms, the most comfortable futons we found on our whole trip). The location is quiet yet convenient, and the hospitality warm and charming. We especially enjoyed taking the bicycles for a spin, Yasu's tips for sightseeing and shopping in Kyoto, and visiting in the communal space with Yasu and other guests upon our return each evening.

Room Tip: Both rooms are spacious and quiet.

Thanks for your review! We had a good time talking with you each evening and are happy to hear you enjoyed, too. Hope you're coming back in the future, NOT rainy days... Thanks again!

Staying in this traditional machiya style house was the highlight of our family vacation! First of all, sleeping in a spacious tatami room on futons was very cool! The decor of modern touches mixed with the traditional style made me feel right at home. Second, the host, Yasu, was so nice to us--- even surprising my husband with a birthday cake and candles! Third, the location was convenient for seeing many of the shrines and temples. We appreciated the hospitality while staying at the Guest House and highly recommend it to our friends.

After years of looking forward to visiting Kyoto, staying at Oil Street Guest House pretty much completed our trip. Our exchange with Yasu and Yoshi was beyond any level of service a five-star hotel can offer: they provided us with hand drawn maps on how to get to places, gave us their suggestions and insights on Kyoto, and gave us a place to stay that has the beauty of old Kyoto, but the necessities of modern life (eh hem, wifi). Their wonderful furry companion Burrito was the cherry on top. Many thanks to the three of them for all the great memories!

Room Tip: Both rooms seem equally great!
